Agreed I finished it yesterday and man what a great show that was. Season 2 cant come soon enough. Come on Defenders!!!!

I'm not sure I agree. For a start, Han Solo wasn't a ladies man, and he wasn't particularly personable. Whereas much was made ofthe point that Starlord was a ladies man, to the point he couldn't remember his lovers names. Because that is so very original and not at all sexist. If anything your description of comic Starlord sounds more like Han Solo than Pratt's Starlord.

I'm only 6 episodes in but I'd agree. Season two of Daredevil has somewhat spoilt season one for me, but Luke Cage has MUCH more interesting characters all around and a more coherent story. Also Mariah using her criminal cousin to do good for her community is much more compelling than Wilson "My daddy was horrible" Fisk.

Yeah I always got some Han Solo vibes reading the character during the DnA run, mainly the dry humor and on-the-spot planning.

Dr Strange wave is up at Target.com and in stock.

Out of curiosity, how much were they at Big Lots ?

I need an MCU War Machine for my collection, as well as a modern comic-based Iron Man, and for a decent price, I might finally pick them up.

They were 10 bucks but yesterday it was 20% off so i nabbed em for 8 n change. Also nabbed a wwe lita ( my all time fave female wrestler )for that too. They are trying to sell those build a wrestler packs for 15 bucks ( which was retail at normal stores ) haha

we did episode 7 last night. while i saw most of it i became a tad drowsy, so i might rewatch that one again.

I think it's safe to say we NEED a Luke Cage figure now !!!

You don't have to agree, my 'word' isn't law. However, in my opinion, it's pretty obvious. Han is a glib/sardonic, smuggler/thief/pirate, great pilot (attached to his ship in ways that seem more significant than any other relationship on screen), and cagey fighter that must be cajoled/persuaded to 'join the cause'/'do the right thing.' When I review that checklist, MCU Peter Quill pretty much possesses ALL of these qualities.

With regard to Han being a womanizer (or not), with only one real on-screen interaction with a human female as reference, Han ultimately (it takes a while and stands in stark contrast to formerly treating her like shit - a popular tactic of men that think they've mastered manipulating women) makes a pretty hard play for Leia in ways consistent with that of a self proclaimed "ladies' man." Their first on screen kiss features him invading her personal space (she even offers protest), followed up by extreme confidence that she'd eventually succumb to the pressure of his 'roguish charm' (and thanks to the wonders of movie scripting, she does relent...even falling in love with this dude that consistently mocked her LOLOL). Those aren't really the actions of a wilting wallflower.

Again, there's no need for you to agree. That said, I'm fairly confident in my assessment of Starlord as a 'Han-archetype' for modern audiences.

lordbest 10-03-2016 06:10 AM

I would agree he is an attempt at a Han archetype, I just don't think he reflects actual, canon character Han Solo. I think the difference is important, because in many respect Han Solo is a very unusual take on the wise cracking rogue archetype. He's a grumpy, anti-social engineering nerd, basically. MCU Quill isn't, he's basically Generic White Action Lead #2447 (which is my biggest disappointment with GotG, they cast an incredibly charming actor like Pratt then crush that charm with awful characterization and dialogue).

It's important to remember that while yes, Solo does attempt to charm Leia in a very hamfisted way on Hoth it doesn't work. She starts to open up to him later when he stops showboating and acts like an actual person instead of an arse.

Edit: Actually re-reading your original post, I misread it, my bad. I thought you were saying MCU quill was a copy of Han Solo, you were saying he was derivative an attempt at a Han Solo type character which I don't disagree with.

Harbinger 10-03-2016 06:16 AM

Starlord in the gotg movie reminded me a lot of Jason ( robert urich ) from the movie ice pirates.

TheBlueMarvel 10-03-2016 06:18 AM

Pratt based his performance on Han, correct?

...and Han's 'typical' approach did work to secure a kiss, right?
...and in spite of everything she knew, Leia ends up seeing his 'other' seldom seen traits to determine his 'date-ableness' (if I can make up a word lol)???

I think fans romanticize Han Solo...I also knew I'd get this convo from at least one "Han Fan." ;)

EDIT I saw your edit...ok. Either way, I accept your opinion...I just find the parallels too uncanny to ignore.

I absolutely agree fans romanticize Han Solo, and they project a lot of the usual traits the archetype has (like being a womanizer) onto him that are actually absent. That's exactly my problem with characters like Quill, Quill is EXACTLY the type of character male fans think Han Solo is, when he isn't.

I'm actually much more of a Luke fan, but my opinion towards Solo softened a lot after reading some excellent analysis of how the character subverts much of the archetype it represents (and how a lot of fans completely miss that).

I'm not a Han fan (obviously)...Not to side track the thread anymore than we already have (I'm sure it will revert back to a wish-list/shopping guide in no time flat :D I kid..I kid)...but I think much of the recent Han analysis is little more than 'intellectualizing.' In my eyes, Han's portrayal as 'grumpy' wasn't so much nuance to offset his character, as it was a quality indicative of the era. The curmudgeonly aspects of Solo's personality were consistent with the 'everyman' of the early 80's. A prevailing hip/dickish attitude that was present almost everywhere in entertainment. Comedians like Bill Murray, Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison (the latter two being more extreme), just to name a few, were beloved for their irreverent 'edginess'...even Michael J. Fox became a star playing an insensitive jerk/smart-ass on Family Ties. It was an era in which Garfield was a wildly popular kids comic-strip, replete with loads of anti-social themes and values. I've this opinion of the period because I grew up during the time and it's where I cut my teeth as it regards 'snark.' That's not to say that the Han analysis is totally without merit, I just don't believe the character to be that complex...I'm neither a Han nor Luke guy.

...I'm a Vader dude, who has never wanted anything other than 2&1/2 hrs of Vader slaughtering Jedi! ;)

donmeca2020 10-03-2016 07:53 AM

went to Walmart early today, to check to see if they restocked the shelves of legends. they did not. however i started to notice they had tons and tons of hasbro boxes and they were getting ready to restock shelves. i asked a guy working there, whom couldnt speak that great of english, if they'll be putting more out. he tells me come back at 1030am today. so i did and i got there they're still working on it so i asked did you get any or will you be stocking up, he refers me to go speak to an older older stocking another toy shelf.

I asked her about what i was looking for, she walks me towards what they have, and then i asked but the other guy told me you got more in. she says " No, that's all we have" when i had a disappointed look on my face she starts to look at me puzzled, and i just left....

Ughhh once again sometimes this hunt is a waste of gas and time... i could have done a full work out instead of going on this today... BAH HUMBUG,.

This show was phenomenal. Totally blew away my misconceptions and expectations. Started at 8 pm Saturday and finished Saturday night. Can't wait for punisher defenders and what ever else Netflix puts out there

SymbiSpidey 10-03-2016 08:52 AM

Jackpot! Went to Walgreens, had the Dr. Strange wave in its entirety. Picked up Iron Fist and Nico. Undecided on Enchantress since I have the SDCC version.

Will probably pick up Baron Mordo once he hits peg warming prices. Don't know if I want to bother getting the whole wave since I have some version of all the other figures.

LapuLapu 10-03-2016 09:20 AM

I was a supporter of the "hunt" for toys but after so many times of going home empty handed, I just resort to buying online save me the hassle of going home empty handed , waste of time and gas. I still hunt but I hunt for characters that I can afford to wait to see on the pegs, characters I really want, I just buy online (either online retail or thru forum friends).

Boy Blunder 10-03-2016 10:21 AM

I tend not to encounter a lot of toy swaps out this way - a few BAF part thefts at one nearby TRU (or random accessories being torn out of 3 3/4" Star Wars figures once in a blue moon), but that's often the extent of it.

However, one of the local Targets had someone who went through and did a parts swap for a bunch of BAF parts for the Allfather wave (why is what I wanna know), resulting in a couple of figures lingering like poor Danny here:
http://i63.tinypic.com/2j5dzdk.jpg

I don't even know what that leg is from, but I've also seen a Machine Man float around with matching arms. This happened a few months ago, and they've lingered since (though it looks like someone finally bought that forlorn Aaron). I didn't really think anything of it because that wave can be found pretty much anywhere for a dime and a song. I mean, yeah, the action was reprehensible and all parties involved should be appropriately kicked in the ass, but it just didn't ping very high on my radar.

This weekend, my wife and I were at that very Target, and saw two Dr. Strange figures sitting in a returns cart. Awesome, right? They were laying face-down, but I could see that one was Strange/Voodoo and the other was Enchantress/Nico. Naturally, I pop over closer and grab them, to flip them over...

http://i66.tinypic.com/jkd0uv.jpg

What. The. Shit.

Pretty sure whoever did this even sliced open Wanda's cape so that it would fit over Hulkbuster Strange's head there, and I can't even tell for certain what those figure pieces are (though that torso is clearly not a BAF). I can't hold this against the employees too much (because, unless they have a reason to take this up to their manager and back up that this is a toy swap, they gotta go with the corporate rules, which is to just take it back), but whoever did this needs a right beatdown.

My dear lord...thats atrocious. That leg with ironfist is from the dc collectibles earth 2 green lantern alan scott. Curious though was anything missing from the havok in the pic?

I normally tend to agree, especially since my area tends to be really bad with keeping up-to-date on latest figure releases. I do admit there's still some excitement though when I find a figure I want at retail, and a bit of disappointment when I have everything I want and have nothing to hunt for. Yeah, it's an addiction lol.

Speaking of the "hunt", I had a bit of an exciting one today. Only ended up getting the Iron Fist and Nico I mentioned earlier, but I went to Toys R Us and found the entire X-Men Wave there, yes, including DP, Wolverine and Rogue. Very nice and if I needed any of them, I'd be screaming through the roof. Still no Abomination wave in sight, has this thing even hit retail? I thought this was supposed to be released a month or two ago. I'm not even seeing remnants anywhere outside of comic book shops.

Can't stand these scumbags. At least these guys don't just leave a completely empty box after stealing from it like they do at my Target. Still though, if you don't have the money for this hobby, LEAVE IT ALONE. Don't resort to stealing. Not only are you screwing over retailers, but you're also screwing over collectors because these things will clog the shelves and the store will never get new product in.

EDIT: I'm also just now realizing....was somebody really so petty as to steal the belt from Iron Fist? WTF? The figure is bonafide pegwarmer, just grab it for like ten bucks online if you need the belt so bad....

I haven't even seen it at my LCS. Unless I'm mistaken, I haven't heard that it's hit retail - probably suffering from the fact that most places stocking the Cap waves are still dealing with the Red Onslaught and Giant Man waves filling up the pegs.

I figured as much. Seems like most stores went ahead and got the Giant-Man wave to coincide with CW's DVD release, not realizing that wave had been out for months. Though it is nice for everybody who wasn't able to grab BP.

Heck I thought it was another Walmart exclusive...So I guess I'm not the only one that hasn't seen it. I take it this should hit all the retail stores then?

I was able to finish my slightly taller man, though it was thanks to a buddy hooking up the head and arm i needed and a black panther, whos easily my fave version of the character, but i was able to score some furies to make the shield troopers, though i was less than thrilled all of them were rag dolled, which turns me off of buying any more of em as its crap i gotta fix hasbros mistakes.

It should and I'm hoping sooner rather than later. Not trying to spend $40+ on Wanda.

I still have yet to see Nick Fury at retail. My local Wal-Mart has (or had, not sure what the current situation is) plenty of Black Panthers and everybody else though.

The rag doll thing seems to be a common problem with that particular figure too, which is sad.
