I saw my second Spider-Gwen in the wild last night at a local grocery store (HEB) and since this one didn't have any real paint issues I went ahead and got it since base retail price is still a good find for this figure.

Wait, you found a Spider-Gwen at a grocery store? What kind of land of plenty do you live in?!

South-Central Texas, we usually see dry-spells at these grocery stores (HEB) but as of late I've been pretty lucky with 'em (this same store got the Space Venom wave back in September). I'm speculating that what happened here goes back to when the Absorbing Man wave was new because when that wave was new this grocery store didn't get it in going in favor of the Cap Red-Onslaught wave. So I'm figuring that maybe they did get it in and have just now all this time later actually decided to open it up. When I went to check the single toy aisle I saw the pegs were full and it was the entire case except for Gwen. I did a little bit of searching though and found the Gwen on the bottom shelf sort of hidden behind some other toys so naturally I gathered that some other person, clearly out of the kindness of their soul, had hidden it down there for me to find like an Easter-egg hunt.
This is far from the first time I've found a toy that some other person had apparently tried to hide. It just always seems like such an odd practice to me where somebody takes the effort to "hide" a figure they want to come back for later when they should realize that it's very possible for other people to find it. Especially at a local grocery store where you can have the store hold an item for you as long you return before closing.

For me I want Ghost Rider's run, the Morbius run, Sleepwalker, and then Spider-Man 2099.

Well I do need the rest of the Spider-Man run that I loved such as In the Name of the Rose and a few other things that will hopefully be given Omnibus treatment someday soon.

One of my Walgreens is REALLY behind on stuff... I also found a Spider Gwen on Black Friday on sale for $16... couldn't pass on it for that price... she's just too cool looking. Also found a minty Pizza Spiderman there for $15 a few months ago... like I said, they are really behind on the waves there.

GRRR... so irritating though, I promised myself I would stick to only the 3.75" stuff... I made an exception for ML Archangel a few years back since he is my fav character. Then I bought ML Brown Suit Wolvie and 90's Rogue... then I promised myself I would only limit it to 90's mutants. Then I got Pizza Spidey and Spider-Gwen both on sale... so I said okay... only 90's mutants and Spideys. But then I bought the Odin wave ML Scarlett Witch on clearance at Gamestop for $10... she's just such a beautiful sculpt IMO. Having that Scarlett Witch really bothered me though until I remembered she is/was Mag's daughter... and thus a 90's-ish mutant... so I'm technically still within the boundaries I set for myself. LOL.

Even though she was never really attached to mutants, even when she supposedly was one, Scarlet Witch will always hold ties to them for House of M alone. Marvel managed to pretty quickly shuffle her strictly into the Avengers fold, she occasionally still popped up dealing with mutant-stuff but she's mainly always been an Avengers mainstay.

Rick Rider is the ONLY Nova in my book. I just hope they dont do something dumb like say its his projection or lmd or say hes sudden a rooster eater or something stupid along those lines. Just give us nova prime kckin ass like old times.

And this time give thanos a full speed nova punch right in his titans!

Haven't read a comic in ages and in my mind she's always going to be Magneto's daughter and part of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

If that's her main association for you, then you haven't read comics in over 50 years. She's been an on-off member of the Avengers since 1965.

This, right here. Yeah, Wanda's a career Avenger, but she's also a founding member of the Brotherhood, and is integral to the mutant lore even excluding things like House of M.

Hell, Wanda's shown up in all three major X-Men animated series (with a major role in both Evo and WatXM), while she's only been in one Avengers series (United They Stand, unless you count the Iron Man cartoon as an Avengers cartoon).

TheBlueMarvel 12-05-2016 12:02 PM

Even within Wanda's lengthy stint as an Avenger, writers worked in her (and Pietro's) mutant heritage (and lineage; I.E. Magneto) and reformed status as a former Brotherhood member. Those old Avengers stories often explored the PR mess the Avengers had to contend with by illustrating thronging protesters carrying anti-mutant placards outside of the mansion. Wanda, Quicksilver, Namor (not known to be a mutant then, but largely considered a despot for his multiple attacks on "surface dwellers"), and Hawkeye (not a mutant, but formerly a villain also) were constantly in the cross-hairs of angry New York'ers and the pablum-pushing Jameson. As far as "before my time" Avengers stories go, I've always found that particular era to be a pretty interesting read...

Let's not leave out the bouncing, blue-furred Beast and his stint with the team, though iirc his time actually worked to improve views of mutants (albeit temporarily) in the eyes of the average 616 civilian. I'm sure he still caused a stir when he first joined.

TheBlueMarvel 12-05-2016 02:45 PM

@BB

Y'know, you'd think he would since he was so obviously a mutant. That said, I don't remember reading many/any Avenger stories highlighting backlash specific to him. My guess is that the stories written for Wanda/Pietro were drafted at the height of the 60's and the social movements that categorized the period (along with the foil of rampant intolerance) bled into Marvel narratives (a'la Stan Lee's deliberate intention). If I remember correctly, Beast didn't join the Avengers until the mid to late seventies; a period of time that, while volatile, was experiencing a damping down of wide-spread political demonstrations. I do recall an Avengers story about Beast going on a date and Hank experiencing a bigoted attack at a night-club. In the way of storytelling, it struck me as funny that a racist dude would think he could beat up Beast - he's as strong as Spiderman (or was then, I think, beast fluctuates so often) and could press ten tons...good luck with that, cretinous slob! LOL

I've been scouring the Legends FB groups (to no avail :( ) looking for the pics I took and posted, because, back in August, I spotted about 8 or 9 Spider-Gwens at a recently-opened Kroger, along with just as many Venoms.

AND, they were on sale for about $15 each. I picked up a second Gwen (to pose seperately as my "unmasked" Gwen), and was able to finally justify picking up Venom and Ben Reilly.

Lately, stores like Kroger, Fred's, and Barnes & Noble have become goldmines for Legends and SW Black figures, now that Walgreens is no longer the "secret spot" that it was about 4 or 5 years ago, lol .

snake5289 12-06-2016 12:07 AM

I actually saw a Select Thor at the Fred's by my house not too long ago. Kind of shocked me a little bit.

I had always assumed that their toy area was on par with a store like Big Lots, but a buddy of mine has spotted a ton of Marvel Select figures, as well as multiples of Ahsoka Tano and other hard-to-find SW Black figures, at his local Fred's.

Also, a local collector in my area recently told me about a rare chase Pop figure that he spotted at the Fred's around here.

If the closest one to me didn't take an average of 45 minutes to get to, Fred's would be a frequent stop on my figure hunting trips.
