Finally got around taking photos of these figures and reviewed it too :) Here are some photos I took.

The yellowing doesn't really show up that well in the pic, but the back is suppose to be the same color as his arms, and I store him in an underground bunker with 0 UV light, a maintained humidity of 40%' and double air filtration in a non smoking house. And he's never been handled by an unwashed hand. So whatever causes yellowing it is unstoppable.

@Trivial
Not to be contrarian, but I wasn't crazy about that Hulk. Then again, I'm definitely not an Ultimate Universe guy. There wasn't an Ultimate universe anything that I prefer to 616... |

HUGE shout-out to Early Cuyler, who hooked me up with a couple of BAF pieces for a real deal. Now I've finished BAF number four, Spaceknight Venom!
http://i64.tinypic.com/zj6wjm.jpg http://i63.tinypic.com/fwn7y9.jpg Still not entirely sure if I'll be keeping him in the long run, but at the moment I'm loving him, though after reading the end of his current series, this figure makes me want a Mania figure even more. Also got Dormammu half done - still going to be picking up Iron Fist and Brother Voodoo, so after that I'll only need his right leg and skulls (from MCU Mordo) and right arm (Comics Strange). If anyone's looking to sell those, let me know! |
sweet..how many BAF's were there last year?

FWIW, I do plan to purchase a case online but I'm going to want a Polaris ASAP (which is fine as I do have an idea for a custom from her that I'll use the case figure on.) I do want all the figures but she's the one I want to wait as little as possible on. Also, I'm going to guess that Dazzler will be the hot item in that wave. Two of my friends who do not collect ML have seen her picture and want to get her. |

Definitely getting/preordering Polaris,Dazzler,Shatterstar and Cyclops.

Gotta catch 'em all. I may not really have a desire for Old Man Logan, but I will support the crap out of every X-Men wave Hasbro gives us. We're on the verge of some mutant resurgence, and I will consume everything I can.
If it wasn't for the X-Men, I probably would never have gotten into comics like I did, and I certainly wouldn't be posting here about Marvel Legends. |
slow day on the thread...

Then, a friend of mine handed me "The Ultimates" in TPB form. I scoffed at it initially, as I was a much bigger X-Men fan, and I always kinda looked at the Avengers as being a team of boring goody two shoes, led by a guy who was the biggest goody two shoe of all, a guy wrapped in the American flag with wings on his head who seemed like an even bigger dork. I eventually caved and gave it a shot, and I was stunned, as Cap was suddenly infinitely cooler than he had ever been, as were many of the other characters. I then gave several of the other Ultimate books a shot, and ended up loving them. I really felt like Marvel did a great job in capturing what it must have been like for those reading during the golden ages, because of what each book brought to the table. Ultimate X-men grounded itself again in the fear and racism (and even tackled issues such as sexuality, as it openly introduced gay mutants for the first time that I could remember outside of Northstar from Alpha Flight...) that made the initial books such a good read. I was able to identify with many of Spider-Man's adventures again, as he struggled to maintain friend and relationships, and Fantastic Four was just good old fashioned science fiction. And then there was the Ultimates...it made a fan of the Avengers out of me, with it's wit and banter, which I feel really carries on pretty well in the MCU (as well as elements from several other Ultimate Marvel comic series...) Granted it wasn't all grand...as I felt that certain books kinda lost their way after the first two or three years, and not all of the re-imaginings of characters were great (Ultimate Carnage anyone?) but I can say that those years were some of the most enjoyable times that I have had reading comics, and had some pretty awesome moments...(such as Fury and Cap testing the Hulk's machismo, or Spider-Man getting ticked off at the legality of a certain Sam Raimi unauthorized-biopic that he wasn't getting paid a dime for...) Seriously though, I enjoyed how they got rid of the child like mentality of the Hulk, and turned him into a being of pure rage that just didn't know any better. It made it easier than ever to understand the conflict that Banner the man was going through. Pissed him off, and he might just eat you. |
@Triv
I'm glad you see it that way, but to me, it felt far too rote. The retread of old heroes with a twist was NOT what I was looking for. At the time, I was reading books like Planetary and Authority (DC). Those books handled much of the same material you're extolling of with greater skill and refreshingly new takes on storytelling. That was a halcyon period of writing for DC (100 Bullets, Jonah Hex, Preacher, etc) and (IMO) many of the stories were far more cerebral and better conceived from a structural perspective. My lack of enthusiasm over the Ultimate Universe doesn't stem from an aversion to homosexual characters, themes, or situations (FYI I view the anti pc/anti diversity-agenda argument as idiotic and representative of a myopic, or stilted world view). I don't care for the Ultimate Universe because I view(ed) it as a gimmick on a multitude of fronts. Marvel used the space as a place to keep bored artists within the fold, while providing greater freedom of expression than was enjoyed in the 616 continuity. Many writers and artists were feeling confined by the "Marvel way," especially with DC doing exciting things. Lacking the temerity to explore different voices and lifestyles with their stable of heroes, Marvel created a shunted-off universe where everything could be easily dismissed as inconsequential given its stepchild status. I've read a decent amount of Ultimate stuff, I'm just not particularly wowed by it....Had Marvel treated the universe like Epic or MAX, I might've respected the effort a bit more. EDIT: and BLAH. I liked that Select Gray Hulk fig! |
