I have always had a 3.75" collection of SW toys and they got better and better every year it seemed but then Hasbro shot themselves in the foot. Once the decision to re-release TPM in 3D was called Hasbro made an entire wave of figures for it with the only really worthwhile/remarkable one being a new Darth Maul. This wave absolutely cluttered my stores and 80% of the wave peg-warmed like they were glued in place. A long drought ensued with no new releases in my area for what seemed to be a little over a year and so I was kicked out of collecting since any figures in the waves after went for ludicrous second-market prices. Eventually the pegs were cleared of TPM stuff and the Black Series 3.75" toys renewed the SW toy sections of my stores with some new stuff but mainly welcomed re-issues of those figures that skipped me because of the dry period. I'll always have a special place in my toy collecting heart for SW 3.75" toys but my days of anticipating new releases are slim and picky. The 6" line however has sort of reinvigorated my SW collecting spirit.
At first I was not interested since 3.75" was my main SW area but I knew that I would still get a few of those "must have" characters for a small display. Basically Boba Fett, a Stormtrooper, and Darth Vader were my only real wants when the line was introduced (Vader hadn't even been announced at the time but we all knew they'd get to him). I hunted for so long to no avail trying to get Fett in wave 2 and had passed on every figure in wave 1. I never found Boba Fett in stores, just a sea of Leia, Greedo, and some Han too. I did then find the Stormtrooper when he was released and got one. It is just such a damn well done toy that I immediately expanded my want-list. I eventually got Boba Fett online for retail price and my collection has now grown a decent amount.
As much as the 3.75" toys are awesome and great to play with there is a notable amount of higher display value with the 6" toys. The fact that Hasbro cut back articulation to '77 levels on their 3.75" toys in general and now reserves articulation in that scale for exclusives put in some extra push towards the 6" line as well. Basically for me it comes down to the 6" figures looking better, being bigger, and then not wanting every character in the line to begin with making them my preferred line now. However if I wanted every character available and then to actually play with them then the 3.75" line has a lot going for it still.

Thank you for the feedback, do you notice a big difference in particular detail on the figures like facial or costume for the size differentials? I'm really looking forward to adding a Sabine to my computer desk and the 3.75" and 6" previews both look great. Then I say to myself "if I stick with 6" then I can't get the 7th Sister or the new Maul 3.75 inch." It seems that Hasbro releases more and a greater variety of figures for the 3.75" line but they just feel so small to me when I look at them.

They'll ride the 6" scale for a while, then switch back to 3.75" in a few years 'cause it energizes the consumer base. Look at Marvel Legends/Universe/Legends.

The facial details are almost the same per line. The 6" figures a bigger but there is no extra detail to really kick it into actually looking like the actor/actress. I think one of the best 6" head sculpts is old Han but even that one doesn't have every single feature nailed, it's Hasbro so we're not going to see like NECA level face sculpting. Characters with helmets though and aliens are another matter. The 6" helmet-heads and aliens are remarkably well done in my opinion. I feel like no 3.75" figure will ever quite match the 6" Stormtrooper, TIE pilot, Boba Fett, Bossk, etc. With the bigger scale and it being a non-face they really do nail a lot of the smaller finer details that just wouldn't happen on the smaller scale. The bodies will just tend to look better on the 6" toys regardless of their head because like I said they're bigger so more fine details find their way in. For what it's worth the accessories also look a lot better in the 6" line but that's just gravy. However character variety will always swing in the 3.75" line's favor since they release more than just four new figures at a time.

As is their nature, when a scale loses its flash and luster (and most importantly strong sales numbers) it fades into a much smaller role while the other sized line resurfaces. Much to the collecting community's mixed reception as some rejoice and others sulk.

The Black Series Shock Trooper finally hit UK shores!! He's so cool looking!

RedAlert Rescue 02-18-2016 04:00 PM

Any signs of another 3.75" scale Tie Fighter without the red stripe... as seen in the Starkiller base "Hux's speech" scene (for example) ?

dukefett 02-19-2016 08:11 AM

I don't collect 3.75" anymore, the Black Series got me and then the Japanese lines have me totally in.

For Hasbro themselves, I saw their SW panel at NYCC last year, they said the costs of developing and producing a (good non-5 POA)3.75" figure is actually pretty close to the cost of a 6" figure, yet they're able to charge a lot more.

That leads me to believe that the profits to be had in the 6" scale is what's going to keep them from ever really bringing back the super articulated 3.75" scale to mass releases instead of just a store exclusive like Walmart.

Just got our old man Han.... my son's did his first review! 90 second videos from a 10 year old boy in England.

Yes, 3.75 are cheaper but Black Series has fewer figures to collect so I figure the price difference would be almost the same. Which do you prefer and why?

3.75" for us.... we ONLY have Force Awakens characters though. The 5 POA is ok because they all fit together. If one was to mix the new 5 POA with other, higher articulated 3.75" they would look cheap.

For me it is ALL about vehicles. To have the setup my son has with the 6" Stormtroopers and 4 Tie fighters and other First Order figures it would cost over £1000 and take up the whole bloody room!

If you like diorama displays, vehicles and playset then go 3.75". If you take a lot of photos or need dynamic posing go 6". If you want all the figures then you can go collect t 40 years worth of 3.75" or wait 10 more years for 6" to catch up. I even then, I would never expect to see a 6" Yakface. ;)

I don't buy that argument at all.

The Resistance shelf.... in progress. Awaiting an Ackbar to arrive, and a few others but will wait until we see them in the wild. Also will add a Force Awakens Millennium Falcon over summer most likely.

Edit: the old man Han from The Force Awakens line is a nice figure. Really glad to add him to our 3.75" TFA collection! Chewie looked odd without him.

Got the hooks and line to hang the upper fighters today, but after looking would prefer to make a stand to be honest.

Going to watch the film again this week for inspiration.

It comes out on disc April 5 so I'd wager it'll be out on digital a couple of weeks before that which means we can own the film next month!

En Sabah Nerd 02-21-2016 05:41 PM

Oh yeah last night at Wal-Mart I finally actually saw Phasma in person, to my surprise this is what the pegs looked like so maybe if you've been hit by hard luck finding this figure then you're luck may change.

Behind her they just had the same 6 Finns from wave 1 and a bunch of Flametroopers (around 8).

Welcome to the Ark!
Unless the rules changed you can already post pictures and links (I think). When you begin entering a new post there are some icons along your text-box toolbar on the same row as the bold, italicize, and underline tools. You should see an icon of the Earth with a small chain-link which can be used to insert links and to the right of that a little bit is an icon of like a mountain range with a yellow backdrop which is the tool for inserting images. To insert images you must be using an internet image hosting site such as Photobucket but I'm not sure what the rules are on what links are and aren't allowed.

Welcome to the Ark Jedi! I am honoured to be quoted in your first post!!!

I think Constable Zuvio is going to be the king of peg-warmers for a long time. I've stop by two Targets in the past week to see what they had and it was all Zuvio. One had like 14 Zuvios and no other Black Series figure.

In my area Finn is pegwarming way more than Zuvio. Like my local Target only has 5 Zuvio and nothing else, but my local Walmart has 10 Finn and no Zuvio.

Defzombie 02-26-2016 10:37 PM

Resistance Rey from a fresh case from Target. The employee said "these are the same as whats up there"
"No, theres a new Rey in here"
I grabbed the figure out of the case and walked away happy.
I may have looked like total nerd but im happy I found what I was looking for lol
