StarWars OverHaul
Is anyone upset about Lucas bending over for Disney and saying everything besides the movies and show is "noncannon" this means our Shadows of the Empire, Knights of the Old Republic, and all the other toys besides the movie and show toys are pretty much fan made bs? Does this piss anyone else off? I feel like we should be able to get all our money back from Lucas if we wanted to haha (joking… kinda…). If it weren't for the new Black Series toys I'd honestly quit Star Wars all together, I have so much Star Wars mercy from my childhood and it's like a slap in the face from Lucas himself by calling all of the toys and books that really got me into Star Wars in the first place is pretty much untrue….
Idk just trying to blow off steam from this….. |
Im just happy to get another star wars movie.

I am too, but couldn't they have made one WITHOUT changing DECADES of canon?
I've been a StarWars fan for over a decade at least (I'm 20) and the EU was a tremendous part of my childhood, changing the canon is like calling my childhood a lie, or at least that's what it feels like :/ |
It can still be canon to YOU though. Just cause they say it isn't, doesn't mean in your mind it has to.
I've only read one star wars novel in my life, and never read the comics so it has little impact on me. I knew for a long time that the books and comics never really gelled well together, with massive contradictions. I think this is part of the reason they are distancing themselves with it. |

I'm not saying SOME of it didn't need to be changed to make it more linear, but I've read a lot of the books and some authors like Karen Traviss and Drew Karpyshyn, for example, did a lot of work to make their books fit the story. The Republic Commando books? One of my favorite series of all time, and it went well and had tie-ins to the game LUcas made money off of. Knights of the Old Republic? Those comics tied in some cool things to the games Lucas made money off of. If they're going to continue to use it to make money, at least do the fans the honor of keeping it canon, it kinda just makes me feel like me AND Lucas need a donut to sit on after what he did for Disney…

To pick and choose a "this and that" as official canon just wasn't a feasible option. Chances are no matter what was picked, it would be contradicted somewhere by something else. They didn't want to be pigeon holed into specific obscure timelines and story threads while moving forward. Star Wars is what any fan wants to make of it. there's enough out there for anyone to find something in the SW universe to call their own. But the new owners shouldn't be handcuffed by contributions that serve as inconsistencies in the lore. By encasing that stuff under the "Legends" or "Legacy" banner (I forget what they're calling it), they allow that stuff to now exist as its own thing without the need to reconcile plots or details that don't jive together. |
I... really don't see the difference. George Lucas seemed to decide what was and wasn't canon randomly before Disney even entered the picture. It's out of his hands anyway though. The EU was always a shifting, frustrating landscape. Knights of the Old Republic (games AND comics), Republic Commandos, Shadow of the Empire and the first Force Unleashed are still some of my top favorite Star Wars stories, though. It doesn't matter what Disney says, in my mind they are all legitimate.
I say this, though, as someone who likely won't be onboard with the new stuff. I'm not investing in any new series like Rebels because Clone Wars was killed just as it finally was about to reach the point I had been waiting for since its very first episode aired. Marvel seems to bump up the price on every comic that becomes a success, too, so I'll be ignoring their upcoming Star Wars comics because of the inevitable $3.99 cover price. |
Technically, everything outside of the 6 films have been considered non-canon for literally decades now. There is a reason that all of those other sources are collectively called the "Expanded Universe". AFAIK, it was never Lucas' intention that anything from the EU ever be considered part of the film continuity. Just like Marvel and DC with their respective multiverses.
So to me, he's just reiterating the same thing he's always said. That doesn't bother me in the slightest, since as Bmorr said, we can all make up our own personal "continuity". In mine, I still maintain that the Rebels fought Wampas at Echo Base (not just the one that Luke had fought). I further assert C3PO tricked some Snowtroopers into entering a room where some Wampas had been trapped earlier. Where did I get that? From a book/cassette tape set I had as a kid. The only thing close to it in the movie is a quick mention of Wampas entering the base shortly after Luke is rescued. |

I don't remember hearing about that sequence being a deleted scene that was actually shot. I had assumed it was in the script (that the books were based on) but got cut by Kershner during filming. That's pretty cool to know it was actually shot and then cut. Amazingly, I have yet to own the Blu-Ray versions of any of the SW films. But that deleted scene gives me yet another reason to pick it up (eventually). |

Sometimes I wish Lucas would have just left the OT the #$@% alone. You'd think after seeing the phenomenon created in the wake of those movies would have proved there was nothing wrong with the films as they were, but the man's a perfectionist. Quote:
For now, just edit your post and cut/paste the YT links below your regular text and it will go away. |

I'm happy that we are getting more Star Wars, simple as that. If I like it great, if not then there is always the originals. I will still count whatever I like as my Star Wars wether it is canon or not. In my Star Wars the Force Unleashed and Clone Wars cartoon will always be apart of it as well as Shadows Of The Empire.
|
do you think they'll put out the OT back in theaters before the new movie comes out?
|
I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I would love to see it and I don't think they'll pass up an opportunity to cash in.
|
I was glad in the late 90s they did that with the special edition. To be a kid having the opportunity to see it in the theaters was amazing. I'd gladly pay to do it again.
|
all this means to me is that boba fett is still in th sarlacc pit.

Personally, I love the EU. I love the EU almost as much as the original trilogy. Actually, I should say that I love specific PARTS of the EU, as I'm not blind to the fact that there is a LOT of filler and crap in the EU. There are plenty of awful novels, comics, games, and characters that I am glad are being wiped out of continuity. While I'm still not thrilled that the EU is being "erased", there's a lot I won't miss about it. I will mourn it's "destruction", but part of me sees this as the EU being euthanized :p
Plus, like Trebleshot said, the events of the EU technically aren't considered canon anyways. That never kept me from enjoying the Thrawn Trilogy or SW Legacy comics in the past, and it won't ruin my enjoyment of these, and other elements of the EU that I enjoy, in the future. Furthermore, in a sense, I can rest easy knowing that (worst case scenario) if Disney tarnishes the Star Wars franchise with their new movies, the "original" EU will be hermetically sealed and will be safe from the potential negative effects of the new trilogy, lol. So overall, it's a bittersweet feeling knowing that this flawed but wonderful part of the Star Wars universe is being eliminated. Hopefully the new novels and comics that tie in to the new trilogy will be a worthwhile replacement. |

i thought SOTE was official. it was a huge marketing thing. A combined book, video game, and toyline extravaganza.
|
woh woh woh, has anyone heard anything about the plot of the new films? we don't even know how much of the EU content will be eluded to yet. and a lot of it (like SOTE) wouldn't be affected much by the new movies (because the new films are further in the future than a lot of the other content) Shadows, if I remember correctly, takes place between empire and return right? So much of the EU stuff is small side stories as apposed to the main films that follow huge wars and "galaxy altering" events that I don't know that anything they do will necessarily definitively appose any of the EU content. unless they said that the solo twins, Mara Jade, and a few others aren't in the story I don't think we should jump to any conclusions biased on one comment by Lucas.

It's about as close as anyone ever got without actually making a live-action film for it. Quote:
You're right to say we shouldn't hit the panic button just yet. But from a writer's viewpoint, it's much easier to write a fresh new sequel than to try to shoehorn something into existing continuity. There's also the possibility that some of the characters and events from the EU may still end up in the new trilogy, but maybe not as they were originally done in the EU. |
New Star Wars going to be good, believe the hype =)
I'm a novice at speculation though, some expert speculators here haha |
