How long till you Retire?
Since I've gotten my objectives met, and goals taken care of.....I have to ask this to the other members of the forum:
How long till YOU Retire from collecting? How long will it be till you've gotten everything in your list to get? If you're like me and have a Master To Get List that's a mental one cause it's too long to be written down that is listed in priority as to the ones you want the most at the top of the list and those that are the "Maybe or Would Like to Get" at the bottom. Or if you have a Master To Get List, a Secondary Objectives List, and a "Stragglers" List of items from all the lines that You follow or have interest in. Right now I'm on my "Stragglers" List which are those items that if I find em on clearance or marked down is usually when I get something which is how I'm going to go on with things from now on. But the question is this: How long? If you've been collecting for a Decade or more shouldn't you be just about through? Or if you collect ongoing lines like the Marvel Line you might never be done. Also Another thing to this, will you also finally get to a point where you won't be active on collecting forums and the like due to being through with collecting? I've reached the point where a majority of what I used the internet for was searching up items that I've been looking for and now that I've found them the Internet's quickly loosing my interest. |
I wont EVER stop collecting. I'll be an old 200 year old man buying toys that say 3+ with people looking at me odd and me saying with my grumpy stuttery voice "I'm a +, so what". Then right away on my scooter.

I'll retire when I'm dead!!! or when MU stops making new figures and nothing else grabs my attention.
|
It would be hard for me to stop altogether. I slow down a lot some years but then it picks up again. There will always be some new Star Wars , GiJoe , and MU that I have to have. Add to that the possibility of some occasional Marvel Avengers , Batman, and whatever else.
|
haha,I thought this was about working,in that case prolly never :/ as far as collecting, until I cant afford it anymore or the product turns to complete crap.
|
I'm still going at 35, so I don't see myself ever retiring.
Never say never though, who knows. Maybe someday in the future it just won't interest me, but right now it does. |
Hard to say, depends on the quality and direction Marvel Universe and Marvel Legends continues to go in, If it's unwanted characters and repaints then I'll probably stop, but as long as they're figures I want and don't have I'll be collecting. I'm trying to collect every 6'' IM figures from Marvel legends, marvel select and the movie lines, I'm down to the rarest/most expensive along with concept/odd ball figures so the factors on me completing are reliant upon my cash flow and availability. I try to buy used or loose to cust down on both overall price and shipping, but doesn't always work that way. Plus there's tons of MU figures I'm mssing from both old and new waves. And with the Avenger's movie coming out next year, I'm sure there will be a ton more merchandise to pick up.

I'm thinking in the next couple of years or so. I've only really collected things that I'm already interested in and it's rare that I start liking new things enough that I want toylines from them. I already caved in and signed up for the DCUC subscription (Sorry, Tiberius) and the Voltron one. I think I'll have all the toys I want unless I get more MOTUC but that would most likely be it. I've thankfully been able to keep my hands off Joe figures and the GI Joe franchise in general.

When I first saw the thread title, I thought to myself, damn im only 30, hopefully ill hit the lottery and be able to retire. If not ill be working till im dead, haha.
I've gone through different hobbies and collecting different types of items so who knows. As long as I have the money and space along with the enjoyment then ill continue to collect for as long as that is. Who knows? |

My Nephews are going to get some of my stuff for sure when I get through having them on display and get tired of them being in storage [If I don't decide to sell em, cause I'm sure some Gi Joe Stuff won't be worth much] after all I plan to at least introduce em to some of the stuff when they're older.
|
I've been at this actively for about 25 years now and as long as I continue to enjoy the hobby, I don't think I'll ever quit toy collecting. I may stop collecting certain lines and pick up new ones here and there, but never a full stop (until I die, that is).

I would probably say I've been retired for about a year or so now. Though I believe with this hobby, you're never really retired. I'm sure there will be something out there that will catch my eye and make me wanna buy it.

Plus there are days like this when I get a nice big haul in that makes me think to continue collecting, but I don't have enough room as it is. |
When the SWAT team stops me with a hail of gunfire.
They'll plan a classic Megatron in my hand and call it "justified". |
Who knows anymore? I definitely don't feel too great about collecting stuff right now, so I might bow out again if need be. I think my recent problems reflect those of many collectors, so I'll just take that as a warning to fade into the shadows again.
|
Well, as long as MU is going, they'll keep offering Revision cases, so you could take a year or more off and still catch up.
Besides, a LOT of the top charcaters are already made- you could cherry-pick the new ones you want most and stay in the game cheaply. |
I've never given much thought as to if or when I'll ever stop collecting... I'm not a hardcore collector of TF's, but I've decided a while ago I'm going to concentrate on collecting only the Classic/Generations themed toys. I guess when it comes to that line, I'll stop when they finally kill the line.
But then again, the figures for TF Prime do look great. And after watching GI Joe Renegades, I'm interested in collecting what figures they release of them. So as long as they make something I find appealing, and it doesn't end up costing me more than I can afford, I'm guessing I'll never truly retire. |
Retiring isn't quite the right word. If anything, taking breaks is more like it.
|
I dont ever really see myself retiring. Maybe its becouse I havent been collecting that long. Maybe 8-10 years. But doing it seriously only since like the fantastic four HML wave
|
I just find it an odd thought sorta to envision me as a really older person [say in my 50s with a room full of Gi Joe Figures,Star Wars Figures,Transformers and comic stuff,no offense meant to the collectors who are that old who have stores or shops or do have a collection like that] right now I'd say I'm outgrowing just about all of it.....-but not fully outgrowing it all, still like some of it but just give it time-
So a good many of you say you'll pretty much never really retire..... Sure it's a nice hobby, but I'm sure if you guys had to ditch the collecting hobby and basically go into forced retirement or just finally realize that they are toys after all and they just sit around if you don't play with them why spend anymore money on it? For some reason I can see some of you Marvel Universe collectors in your 60's going OH MAN THEY FINALLY RELEASED THAT CHARACTER?!! AND I'VE BEEN WAITING ALL THESE YEARS FOR IT! [Another good reason for those of you collecting to retire is that well at some point in your life you'll eventually out grow toys, even the collectible stuff and more pressing life issues will take over] |

Nothing is ever set in stone. But if I was given the choice, as long as it remains something that makes me happy, I would happily keep on collecting. |
When I'm not into it anymore or more important things come up. Tomorrow or never.
