MOC or Open???? ...help me
OK fellow arkers, I need your help. I am a bit anal about my collecting. I have all of my figures MOC. MU, DCUC, DC Direct and recently Marvel Legends. I couldn't lay off of the new Marvel Legends mainly due to the fact that I love the idea of having DC and Marvel figures that are in scale with one another. However, I'm thinking it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to collect them for that reason when they are all in package on the wall.
I don't keep them on card for any reason other than I like how it looks, I have no plans to resell them or anything like that. I just have a hard time talking myself into opening them... What do you guys think? Do I open the DCUC and Legends but leave the MU and DC Direct MOC? Do I just open them all? Do I open none of them? I'll obviously have to make my own decision, but would really like to hear you guys' thoughts and opinions. thanks |
I'm a MOC guy myself, but with the TFP RID line, I've gone ahead and got doubles of everything so I can open and keep carded. Plus I always hear some horror stories on how when you crack them open, sometime the figure just breaks.

That said, open your damn toys. |
HAHAHAHHA YOU SAID ANAL HAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAAHHH.
Now all childishness put aside I'd say keep them MOC. Now you said you have no plans on selling them, but who knows, that may change right? There's also a factor of room, I mean, do you have any shelves ready? If not, that's a lot of work on it's own. And money if you need to buy shelves... Or just buy doubles, but I'm sure that's a money issue. |
Leave'em all MOC
|
Buy doubles, have some to open and pose or play with, keep the other moc. I buy 2, not of every one, but mostly just the ones I really want. Also, once you start to open 1 or 2, you'll want to open more and more...you can buy (book) shelves for 20-30 bucks from Big Lots, Walmart, Target...2nd hand stores, garage sales, flea market.
I started MU and Transformers moc. But they are way more fun to pose and transform than to just look at in a box. Especially when you start seeing everyone's collection and dio pics!! |
I'm an opener. It saves space and opening figures it just fun. I usually save my hauls and open them one at time to spread out the fun. I do keep my extras MOC but that's really just so I have a fresh back up for my favorites.

Seem to me like you're starting to wonder what else you could do with them once you open it. If you say you're not going to resell them then open them. One thing i can tell you is Open figure collect dust.... Unless you get an awesome glass case which make things a whole lot easier. FYI open figure look awesome together! check out my collection display :D

I open all my stuff. I do keep backing cards to certain sets, though. Especially if they have stats/bios/etc. I also open my Masters of the Universe Classics in a certain way (slicing a trap door at the bottom of the bubble) so I can repop them back into the blister for that MOC look if I ever wanted to. You may want to consider this yourself for your figures. :)

open them! itll be like christmas! only you paid for your own presents.

Most, but not all. Thanks for the input. I still have no idea. |
Open a couple from one of your more recent hauls. If you're upset that they're no longer MOC, you can go and repurcase what you just opened. That way, you can see how you feel about it.
|
I understand how you feel I went through the same thing awhile ago, but I decided that opening them was much more fun then looking at them. PLUS decide to build a dio when a I haves bigger place for them.

I keep my arkham asylum series 1 figures MOC with the SDCC exclusive and NYCC exclusive. I open all the other figures I have though
|
It all depends. I keep anything super rare like comiccon exlusives mib, but majority I open. I have a few items left moc, incase I loose my job then I got enough to sell and make rent easily enough lol. If you plan to collect ML and I mean the older stuff, you will spend a fortune buying moc, and shipping moc, loose lots are the way to go. save you a lot of $$.
|
I am a MOC collector as well. The only series I went out and got loose was my Crash Dummies (I am even planning on getting my hands on some loose TMNT toys, but thats aways in the future). I didn't want to start collecting Marvel Legends cause I really don't have place for another huge Marvel Collection MOC since MU and Select take up already half of the room.
As soon as I saw the Future Foundation Variant I said to myself "I Want it". But then I told myself I wasn't going to collect any others from the lines.. Well once opening it... I fell in love.. I had never owned any marvel legends before so I do not have anything to compaire it to, but I found it to be a really solid figure. From that day I have been hunting down the rest of them to open. I am like you, I collect MOC because I love the figure. Not to hope one day they will pay for a house and car. I love looking at them all up on the walls with all their artwork. So my vote is to open them. And if you really want to get some doubles and pack them away. Once you open you will not be disappointed.. this coming from another fellow MOC anal collector! lol |
I have never not opened a toy (unless I had a duplicate, or don't have a place to put it. SDCC Skystriker Starscream you will be opened one day!!!). Its a toy. Play with it. Sillyhead.

I find you either open them all, or keep them all moc, it's really expensive to buy doubles of everything just to have 1 to keep moc and 1 to play with, as it seems that anybody that does that has 1 for fun and 1 for collectable value plus the look of moc. I have several friends who collect movie figures and sports figures and keep them moc, so in 5-10 years they maybe worth 10times the amount. Not a bad idea, but doesn't always equal big payouts.

Retail MU about 11-12$ LCS MU about 14$+ depending on the figure Retail Marvel Legends ...... umm... I have yet to see Marvel Legends in retail LCS Marvel Legends 24$-29$ each! So collecting doubles is just sickening for us in Canada. |
I am a MOC (anal) collector myself, i just love the way a case fresh crisp package looks. But since i joined this forum i have been tempted to tear a few open myself. I actually broke down and tore into a couple Transformers this past weekend. So either way if your not happy, blame it all on the bad ass pics on Toyark!!!

Keep your MOC collection and buy doubles of the ones you want to play with, opening only the doubles. :)
