Favorite Interpretations of Spawn
There's been many different takes of Spawn over the years. Like some kind of hellish Barbie, he's been a cowboy, a pirate, a samurai...you name it. Which interpretation tickled your fancy the most?
Some of my picks: Zombie Spawn http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...hoto_01_dp.jpg Released in the late 90s when their toys where still TOYS and they were amping up the detail to boot. Plus, what's not to love about a zombie with guns and a big damn chainsaw? Manga Samurai Spawn http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...n_photo_03.jpg I remember this guy being a little on the rubbery and flimsy side but it's a pretty damn sleek design, probably my favorite from the "manga" lines. Spawn the Black Knight http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...hoto_02_dl.jpg This is a wonderfully detailed bulky bastard that still has playable articulation, and a totally bad ass weapon. Plus, the helmet is removable, relieving since they usually went for the hamburger head look as a hard to find variant. Mandarin Spawn http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...hoto_03_dp.jpg An obvious choice. Not so great on articulation, but it's got to be one of the coolest examples of this company's love for painstakingly ornate detail and the thing is almost 10 years old now. Good accessories too, even if he can't do much with em. Spawn the Blood-Axe http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...hoto_02_dp.jpg From the Viking Age line, one of the last where we got any decent movement from McFarlane figures, and they pulled it off very well with most points of articulation hidden in the sculpt or under armor. I almost prefer the box set version, packaged with his horse Thunderhoof, but the single carded one does have the better weapon, and it looks more menacing what with the ever so charming worm filled mouth. And finally, if we're gonna do a version of Al Simmons: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...to_04_dp-1.jpg Spawn IV, "the Arsenal of Doom." Articulation is only ok - he's got a V crotch with no knees, but hey, he's armed to the teeth and anytime they ridiculously treated Spawn like your run of the mill 90s super hero full of gun belts, extraneous pouches, and no less than an entire ton of firepower about his person (er, Hellspawn?) I was kind of into it. I think there are a few versions of the Al Simmons Spawn that either look better or work better as toys, but for me, this is one of the best ones that fall somewhere in the middle. SO NOW, feel free to look back and pick your own favorites :D |
Zombie Spawn tops my list as the best. He was just such a cool figure, and I loved how they actually sculpted in a holster for the shotgun. I also really liked Mandarin Spawn, but he was pretty much a plastic statue. A beautifully detailed statue, but a statue nonetheless.
Oh and a couple others for your consideration: Battleclad Spawn http://www.spawn.com/TOYS/spawn/seri...hoto_01_dp.jpg From series 6, he was one of the most posable Spawn figures I owned and his armor was removable, giving you much more playability since you could pretend he "suited up" for battle. Hatchet http://www.spawn.com/TOYS/spawn/seri...hoto_02_dp.jpg From Series 13: Curse of the Spawn I, this guy give Cenobytes a run for their money. One of the most gruesome sculpts I've seen and extremely detailed down to the face masks on his hips. |
Ah yeah Hatchet is a good choice! I've got that one somewhere.

My personal favourite though is a tie between the Manga Spawn or the Future Spawn. Manga Spawn: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...MngSpwnMin.jpg Fairly articulated, and BIG. He's got cool wings on his back like a bug's wings, and the helmet is removeable. Plus a nice sword. Future Spawn: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...y/tfutures.jpg The thing is like an ED-209, with a torso of a Spawn inside. He's got a huge gun, big mecha legs, claws, you name it. He was always a lot of fun to fiddle about with. Still got him around here somewhere, actually. He'd have been one of the last to get boxed away. |
Manga Spawn gets my vote too. It was just about the last series that I collected from Spawn. He's all sorts of cool and with the bug and sword plus seeing his burnt head on a robotic anime looking body is bad ass.
