Star Trek Starship toys
I love the starships in Star Trek. Even moreso than Star Trek itself.
The only thing keeping me from buying up the DS Starship line is price. But... why is it that Galoob in their micromachine line was the last time we every got a full line of toy ships that weren't halfassed? And what I mean by this is a full range and variety of ships that had decent detailing. Most companies make some great looking ships, but they usually only produce just a handful of the best known ships, and then end (That's what I mean by halfassed). Most companies produce this: Enterprise (TOS, but now ad the new reimagined version to this), a TOS Shuttlecraft, E-A, E-D, the Reliant, A Klingon Bird of Prey, a Romulan Bird of Prey, a D-7 Battlecruise, and a Romulan Warbird. If any lines go beyond this, then we'll get a Klingon Vorcha, a Ferengi Marauder, the E-E, E-NX, and a Borg Cube. And if... and only if we're reaaaaally lucky... we'll get the Voyager, the Defiant, DS9, and a Runabout And maybe the Excelsior. That sounds like a lot. And on the surface, it really is. But this is the only mix we get. No matter what company, it's always this same group. But when you look at all the different ships that are in Trek, it's a very small persentage, and it gets really boring. So... is it because no one can find their footing anymore, and survive long enough to get anymore more out? Or is it companies snagging the lisnece, trying to make a quick buck off the best known ships, and then giving up the lisence and not really caring to do anything more with it? Why couldn't Diamond Select create a cheaper, smaller line of ships, focusing on getting out more than ships named Enterprise? Or, make a line of scaled ships? Or just do something that isn't more variations of a handfull of Enterprises? What's wrong with a Nebula? Or an Akira? Or an Oberth? We've never had a Nebula, since Micromachines, and pretty sure a lot of ships from then have yet to pop up. And we've never had an Akira, at all. |
The Furuta/F-Toys lines have had a lot of well detailed mini ships. A good number of them scale well with some of the DST ships. They did give us the Prometheus, Equinox, Voyager, etc. I do wish someone would make an Akira class as I think that's one of the Federation's best designed battleships.

hot wheels attempted it, but stopped at only 4 ships.

The next wave, only the Narada is different. New Enterprise, old Enterprise (Which never got released, dispite being advertized), and NX Enterprise. Still, all the same as everyone else. |

Didn't know there were others. But it sounds like they're the only ones who made a decent go at it. |
A while back you could get whole sets for cheap on ebay. Now they are higher priced. I still has extras of a lot them around here somewhere. They are pretty cool for the size they are.

I'd recommend looking into the Eaglemoss line when they start coming out in the UK. The old Micromachines are the best detailed Starships there are, they had tons of details and those larger playmates ships and those titanium style ships don't have anything on the detail of those from a decade ago.

The only one that bugs me is...why is the JJ-Enterprise listed as a "Special"? Why wouldn't it be included with the main line? It's kinda crummy that it's in the UK, but that can't be helped.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aQnE40Ttvx...tion+ships.jpg Image of the first few ships in the line. Not too thrilled with the refit Enterprise, but it's still better than Hot Wheels sad attempt. The Bird-of-Prey is nice, but I plan on getting the Diamond Select version at some point. That Warbird though is REALLY nice. Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection The official website. |
Thanks for that pic. I looked them up, and couldn't really find anything on them. No one selling them, and a googlesearch kept throwing in too many toys that weren't from this line for me to know what I was looking for.
The D looks pretty bad. I have friends in the UK, and may have them pick up some of the ones that don't exist in any other form. Thanks tons for the info! I'mma gonna kill for a nebula on that scale, even if it looks as bad as that Enterprise. |
Well, I'm not sure they're out yet is the thing.
And I hope to see their version of the JJ-Enterprise. There's no way it can look any worse than the Hot Wheels version. |
A lot of those on that list are dreamships for me. I must aquire them. (I can do without some of the more boring stuff, like the holoship)
Only slightly related, I read on ditl.org that the new ships that we saw introduced in First Contact (Akira, Steamrunner, Norway, and one other), the reason we never saw them again (As in DS9), is because the CG files were accidentally destroyed. Grain of salt, though. Doesn't explain much, given they rebuilt a lot of physical ships from scratch in CG form (Like the nebula). |
We saw the Akira a few times, the Steamrunner maybe one or two more times, but the Norway's files WERE lost completely. Honestly...not that big a loss to me. Very much the ugliest of the three.

Honesly, none of them are nearly as interesting as the more standard type starfleet ships. The Akira is cool enough (Enough so that I want a representation), but all the others are left wanting.
Also, given their registry numbers predating the USS Galaxy (By a decade or two in some cases), they don't make much sense. The USS Pasteur also falls into this, but not as much. However something I've noticed... all five ships (The Olympic, Akira, Steamrunner, Norway, and Saber) all have very simular design cues. The first contact four of course are obviously related. The Olympic, any simular design cues are coincidental, but if you look at the nacelles, they do match up. A lot of the technical aspects (not the form itself) really do line up pretty well to the first contact four. And given that the olympic's regirstry lines up being contemporary with them, creates more cohesion (At least in my eyes it does), and makes this early 24th century run of starfleet ships make more sense. |
Also, it seems that Mattel IS reviving their Star Trek line for Hot Wheels with a wave featuring the Kelvin, Narada, Prime-Universe Excelsior(just making that clear since some people tried to say that it was from Into Darkness), and an unknown ship from Into Darkness.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_55ifS2F9c...rek+Narada.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F5QdBQocQy...USS+Kelvin.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--tlZt7HZmH...+Excelsior.jpg If these are close to the final products, then these are leaps and bounds above their prior efforts. Also, if you can find them on eBay, the Japanese Bandai Star Trek line is pretty decent if their K'tinga battle cruiser is any indication. |
I never understood why they didn't do the Kelvin in the first wave. But glad that Hotwheels is having another go at it.
However, everytime I hear about it, it's a different line-up. This is the first time I've heard about them doing the Kelvin, and Excelsior. Last time they didn't even bother releasing the full advertized wave. But, hopefully this time they'll stand behind it more, and continue with multiple waves. The Hotwheels ships, and Playmate's New Enterprise were the only toys released for the last movie that were any good. |
So many of those Eaglemoss models would be musts.

I don't have them all but for Furtua I think the Jem Hadar fighters, Kazon raider, Equinox, Bird of Prey, and maybe the Grissom (depends on whose specs you believe) scale well with the DST Enterprise D and E. The F-Toys NX-01 and Defiant (comes with a cloaked version) are also about the right size. The Jem Hadar fighters were only 3-4 bucks on ebay a year or two ago so getting a good number of them was easy. They look best when displayed in a group.

Have you checked out the heroclix star trek? they are in scale to the micro machine ships.
