Like most of Colonial Marines the Raven lacks any real explanation. Unlike other new alien designs from the game I do sorta like the Raven.

In a way you described the game right there. Some cool designs but no satisfying story.
Just spit-balling here but we didn't see an abundance of lifeforms on LV-426, it was pretty much lifeless prior to the colonists' efforts (except for those eggs of course). So either the Raven came from a human and just evolved differently for some reason or he spawned from a hamster! Think about it there were some hamsters in the movie so maybe one of those ran into a facehugger and wasn't very lucky. The aliens that spawn from men are the basic warriors we all know with some human like qualities, those from dogs have longer limbs with a leaner build for speed, and then clearly those that spawn from hamsters are goliath sized juggernaut monsters... clearly.

Edit: y'know assuming that miraculously like the entire Hadley's Hope facility somehow survived obliteration from that basically atomic bomb that went off so there could still be hamsters.
