Quality vs Quantity

would you prefer to own 1 hot toys figure or 20 MU/Starwars/Transformer toys... I love hot toys, bigger is always better in my eyes and the scale and details and attention to detail in sculpt, accessories and clothing are unreal but the price break is a little hard to swallow, went the average figure is between $150-300 range... and for the same price of 1 figure you could equally get a small army of or team of figures

20 MU figures. For sure. While I am definitely a believer in quality over quantity, I just love the 3.75" scale. I'd rather have a small army than a glorified doll.

Give me twenty (good) TFs. That's my interest. So couldn't care less about Hot Toys.

Shouldn't the equation be more like

1 Hot Toys= 6 ML/DCUC=20 MU/GI Joes/TFs= 50 DCIHS= 100 plastic army men...haha

Only half joking, I'd argue that the MU/Joes/TF have a good quality control...but obviously as not well CRAFTED as ML/DCUC or even Hot Toys. Then you have other toys like DCIH which has very few good "quality" aspects

But to answer your question....I'd definitely go for having 20 MUs or Joes over one Hot Toys...

I can picture the conversion chart permanently etched on the back of high schoolers' notebooks.

The Hot Toys look awesome, but they don't really seem like toys to me. At that price, I'd be too nervous that I'm going to break it or ruin it somehow, and I don't like my toys making me feel like I'm handling mom's fancy fine china.

Give me 20 Mu or G.I. Joe figures any day of the week.

Also I think you have to take into account your collecting style...

Do you open or not. Are you a completionist? Do you like to keep things in one specific scale? Do you dabble in everything?

For a Hot Toys figure...you may get 2, 3 tops, figures that are concurrent with each other (Iron Man and Whiplash for example)

I would argue that Transformers are better-crafted than any ML/DCUC figure. Compare the sheer amount of moving parts and engineering that goes into a single deluxe TF versus the standard male and female bucks for DCUC or even the base-level of articulation for a given ML figure. There's not much new in ML or DCUC anymore. Most of the design costs have already been recouped a few dozen times over, whereas the Transformers brand is constantly pushing itself to do better with new molds, design elements and action features (gimmicks).

While Hot Toys may have the upper hand in detailing and size (and in some cases, accessories and articulation), the limited nature of the items makes it much easier for the designers to devote more time on craftsmanship and quality control than Hasbro or Mattel can possibly do with their mass retail lines.

In fact, I would say the only fair comparison is with other similar lines, such as Sideshow's 12" offerings. Because, given the choice proposed by the OP, I would have to say give me the 20 Transformers. You can keep that Hot Toys "figure".

i just got a ghost booster to go with my yamato vf-os! (yeah off topic but i'm super excited). i'd chose 1 nice valk over 20 tformers. but then again i love macross.

honestly though i think tformers are made better than they have ever been. the transformation on the upcoming generations scourge is EPIC. and the way generations lugnut's wing configuration works? fergitaboudit. amazing. and i don't even like that character.

i have to agree with trebleshot. transformers are much better crafted than ML or DCIH.

No, a transformation on a plastic toy is not EPIC. The ocean, space, mountains and time are EPIC.

that's getting a bit literal. but if ya wanna get literal here's the definition of epic: noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style.

so see...the ocean, space, mountains and time really aren't epic. and neither is a transformation of a plastic toy. but honestly...where is the FUN of being that literal in a discussion about toys.

I gotta side with Treble and Firmpulse.
I think TFs are the *best* line on shelves, honestly. They have decent quality control, and they are the best engineered line on the block. Each single toy gives far more play factor than a half dozen MU, or DCUC figures. Given the fact that a deluxe TF is the equivalent of a standard DCUC figure... a Deluxe TF is $12, and a DCUC is $16. I feel not only are you getting a better toy, you're also getting far more, for far less.
This is coming from someone who focuses his collection on DCUC. Honestly, I feel for what we get, usually no accessories, and a couple basic generic bodies with a new head, maybe a couple new parts, they're drastically over-priced.

basically i like all that MARVEL figure in many kind of them. But right now, i more like to action figure, since i can make a pose or diorama for them. I have some statue and HOT TOYS but already sell all of them and just collect for action figure (3inch and 6inch)....so its your choice and your need, which ones of them more attractive for you to have

I'll gladly allow an exception for Macross toys, especially the transforming Valks. Now those can give Hot Toys or Sideshow a run for their money any day.

I love Macross (and Robotech), but sadly, that is a toy line that I have to stay far away from. It is a rabbit hole that I would never emerge from, should I ever take the leap.

I've heard similar complaints over the usage of "awesome" too. But as long as we're not comparing toys to Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Beowulf, I think we're doing all right.

yes. rabbit hole indeed. the first 1/60th valk i bought was the yf-19 then the yf-22. i told myself i would stop after those...but 10 yammies later and i can't get off the train.

My first Macross was the VF-25F with armor. My expression is always "dannnnnggg". Then the 1/60 VF-1F so I can make a "masterpiece Jetfire." I'm a little scared to make it though because it's so expensive. As for quantity vs quality: I'd much rather have more MLs and DCUCs than hot toys.
