Hi I wanted to make some custom figures. I wanted to make some figures from scratch by sculpting them, but I'm not totally sure about what materials to use. I thought abut clay because I know I can take my time on the figure and always come back to add some more detail, but I don't know about the different kind of clays yet. Anyone got some tips or/and tricks on how to make a good-looking custom figure using sculpt ?

Back in the day people swore by Sculpey for designing figures, but these days it seems like more people favor Aves Apoxie Sculpt. As far as tips/tricks, I would recommend you visit the sites of folks such as Jin Saotome or Kyle Robinson. They are highly regarded in the custom action figure world for their quality of work, and have a list of preferred "tools", and a few basic tips that they offer for folks wanting to design their own custom figures.
