The SDCC interview with the guy who works at McFarlane was enlightening. He claimed a lot of the character choice came down to the license holder and a lot of the people in those positions want Batman because they know he sells.

Yeah, no surprise there. Toyguru had said something similar with how DC/Warners were selecting the characters for the first couple of waves of DCUC and they were making sure each wave would have a Bat character or Superman related.

Jesus. I sincerely hope not. It'd be a pain to sell all of my DC figures.

that's why most of my DC Collection is funko pops because Funko while they do make tons of Batman like DC Collectibles and Mcfarlane do. They still make other DC Characters that Fans want. I mean I got pops of Zatanna Constantine and Swamp Thing when Mcfarlane does those who knows.

I have heard similar things related to DC, multiple times for multiple companies over the last decade. So the focus on heavy Batman with McFarlane may not be his choice. Or DCD's choice in recent years. Or the comic division for that matter.

Maybe someone will let it breathe again with this reshuffle, but who knows.

Okay, I can solve all your problems. Just put Batman in a Flash suit. Batman in a Green Lantern suit. Batman in a Wonder Woman suit...

Its sad to hear and I wish there had been se different restructuring to keep thr toy division alive. DCD offered and approached product development different from licensees because they were in house. As much as I like Hasbro product and what McFarlane is doing, it is ultimately redundant, either with reused sculpts or pre-existing designs, DCD let them do unique or original products much more easily. I was excited about the possible DC Lucha line and I think of all the unique artist designs or the Black and White (and Red) lines. Its not the loss of some lackluster figures, but that whole avenue for creative and unique designer offerings. Besides a bunch of people losing there jobs, it's the fact that we'll likely never get options like those ever again or at least not any time soon.

Since the 2000's I have come to hate Batman.
I love Nightwing, and DC punishes anything that isn't Batman. He has too many super-powers for a guy with no powers.

Makes DC collecting boring for me since every line quietly goes away once the Bat characters are done.

The Batman/Superman focus will never work long term because it is detrimental to the over-all product and cannibalizes itself.

The whole company is centered on him, and other characters get used as fodder by him. Warner made one character so important that other characters no longer matter. Why buy product for a character who'll just get humiliated by Batman?

The product becomes less compelling. What character has either not been beaten up by him, over-powered by him, or been used as a one night stand by him?

DC and Warner went too far with it, their product is damaged now. This is the issue of fictional characters having real world impact.

This is a retarded comment. Federal unemployment ended in July, there's no new deal coming out of Congress, and Trump's order is an unworkable mess. The DC employees are fucked.

I think you have to understand that Batman is a little more accessible for a non-comic audience than the other characters. Characters like Lantern, Flash and Superman come across as a bit more detached from reality. I can tell you from my own experience that I got into comics through Batman. Batman is essentially like Jason Bourne character, that operates in the shadows with a nice looking Bat costume. So the appeal is high. I know friends who think comics are garbage that still consider the Dark Knight trilogy as their favourite movies, and I think it is for that reason.

That being said, once you enter the DC universe through Batman, you do get introduced to more characters you start to like. The fact that Batman gets involved with all of them helps in that regard. The fact that he dominates them in some manner is also simply his character. He is like the rep for humanity, and seeing him being able to do what he does only make you root for him because he is playing for “our” team. This is why you see him take down high powered villains in JL comics while struggling to take down human enemies in his own comics. The focus is different,

So I think their strategy with Batman makes sense. The issue is that when it comes to merchandise, they tend to not cover other characters with similar levels of exposure. Also, it’s not just Batman. Wonder Woman and Harley is the same. You get tons of WW figures and statues while there are so many in the DC universe without that many to their name.

I feel for those who lost their jobs, especially now. But I'm hoping that eventually this will spur some of these very talented people into being free to create their own work as well. Look at how far Mythic Legions has come. Look at how many projects are in Kickstarter. Maybe it won't be for DC properties, but these are really talented individuals.
Ultimately, it is a business choice, and it's obvious that business was run badly otherwise this wouldn't have been a thing. There are other ways to deliver content or change the model to meet the current collecting environment. The same goes for Hasbro, Marvel, or any other franchise licensees.
