I definitely don't see the line ending anytime soon, and easily continuing into '13 and '14 seeing as the sequels to Thor and Captain America are targeted for release around those years.

I'm guessing they're just because Hulk has such a wide stance. Doesn't seem to be a problem though, his feet will just be overlapping onto the bases connected to his.

Yea, Imperius Rex is clearly the variant. The figure is packaged as Sub-Mariner. Neat, but I prefer costume variants since I don't use the stands for display.
