This series was the first anime I was exposed to by way of Robotech. As I grew older, I learned the differences between the 3 series that comprised Robotech, and as such realized how dumbed down they were when shown in Robotech.
While I certainly respect Robotech out of nostalgia and wished the Shadow Chronicles turned out much better than it did(I did not like it), I prefer the original Macross from Japan much more. I also bought the DVD set of Mospeada(which was shown here as the 3rd part of Robotech), and man that show as a whole is underrated! It's great, it has good music, unique mecha, and a good storyline!
My favorite anime is Macross. Learning how different it was from Robotech, and seeing how different it was via the Animeigo DVD box set, I was blown away.
This is what I missed during childhood, the much more mature storyline, protoculture actually meaning something, and Roy being a true skull leader that people would expect him to be. No older brother slightly on the edge for us, no, this guy was the womanizing fighter ace who prided himself on never getting shot down, able to become an ace during a hangover and shoot anything down with ease.
The music is good too, timeless in a way. I love this series and it's sequels. I was even a fan of Macross II, yes Kawamori hates it, and yes it's story isn't that great because it is just a retelling of DYRL 80 years into the future, however it was entertaning to watch, has fan favorite mecha designs, and the music was great.
The latest Macross I saw, was Frontier, and it is awesome. Music by Yokko Kanno, a hot headed main character and unique mecha design combined with a story that is hard to predict combine into one great Macross series for the 25th anniversary.
I only wish the Vajra were explained more.
