Tape . mask off the unwanted parts. But truth be told I use this as primer on my soft plastic figures. It sprays thin and clean, you can drag your nail across it when dry and no chance of scratching the paint.

This is coming from a Spray can hater too, I loathe rattle cans. I much prefer the control of my Iwata but I have not yet tried to decant this and run through my brush.
