Ive notice before that the artwork they put on the front of the packages doesn't always depic what the figure should look like. The picture on the back of the package of the actual figure is what should be referenced to decide if the figure is a variant or not.
I have a few examples but I don't have pictures of the back of the package, I'll tell you whats on the back and if you really don't believe me I guess I'll have to take pictures to prove my point lol.
to start off:
Human Torch Wave 1 #11
As you can see the artwork is of the Human Torch Flamed on, not at all what the actual figure looks like. The same artwork was used for the Human Torch Flamed on figure from Wave 1 #07. Mine that I have is the variant because if you look at the picture of the figure on the back, it is of the dark blue custome.
The Thing Wave 3 #19
As you can see the artwork that was used has the thing with no pants but the figure has pants lol. Mine is the variant cause the picture of the figure on the back has the dark blue with the black boot and black belt.
Punisher Wave 3 #20
Artwork shows white gloves, yet the figure has black gloves. Now this one is not the variant because the picture of the actual figure on the back has black gloves.
Bottom line, to me, the variant is when the figure doesn't match the picture of the figure that is on the back of the package. So for the absorbing man, the metal skin version is the Normal one and the skin color on is the variant.
