Birds of Prey recently came out on DVD.
When this series was on air, I was barily aware it even existed. I was always at work when it came on. I was never aware of fan reactiosn to it, either.
Well, I picked up the DVD, and am currently a little more than half way through it, and I'm curious as to what others thought of this series.
Personally? I think it had potential that was unexploited. The changes made to the characters don't bother me.
My biggest issue is the cheesefactor. They tried too hard to make if "comicbookie" and "dynamic," with lots of hokey music and sound effects, and lots of extreme angles and spinning the screen for no apparent reason.
But you can tell where this series was a jumping point for Smallville. I can see where they learned from mistakes they made and toned down a lot of things, while amped up others for Smallville.
I think if I had been looking foreward to this series, it would have been a letdown. However, coming in completely blind, long after it's over, I'm don't hate it. There are lots of little things I don't like, lots of little things that are annoying:
Huntress' inability to act any emotion beyond calm and anger.
Inability to use any named villains beyond Lady Shiva and Harley Quinn. Not that I'm expecting Poison Ivy or Riddler every episode, but all the generic metas get boring.
The afore mentioned zany camera angles and rotating zoom-ins/zoom-outs.
The costumed hero scenes are about as cheesy as the Burton batmovies (Where they sadly took their inspiration from)
Well... these three things are more or less top of my list as the standouts.
Lots of stuff I think they did well...
the cast I think had a good vibe going.
The basic plot and set up for this series
Huntress can't act, but she's pretty enough I don't mind as much.
And I really can't find anything wrong eith the plots of the episodes themselves.
Any other opinions on this series?
