Well, either the majority of them actually did have a chip on their shoulder back then (And watching historical documentaries, I could understand why), or that's just a *really persistant* bad stereotype, because even togday they *still* usually write black folk that way in 60s period pieces.
Probably a bit of both, with a heavy leaning towards the latter.
