Certain actors just have this... presence... about them. And it gets really difficult with casting female characters because there's far fewer actresses who have a presence about them. Does that mean they're bad actors? Not nessisarily.
As an example... Sigourney Weaver most definately has presence. You know she's around. You know she's there, and you just respect her for simply being there. There's just something... powerful... about her. Flip over to someone like Jennifer Aniston... she just does not convey that kind of air about her.
The problem comes in with a lot of female comic characters *do* have a presence. People like Wonder Woman, or Invisible Woman. When they burst through a wall and beat the badguy, you're supossed to feel every bit as confident and safe with them as though it were Superman, or Captain America. Even when they aren't, you would just feel like you're safe in their presence.
That's *very* difficult to find in male actors. It's almost impossible to find in female.
And that's a big part of why Jessica Alba fails as Sue Storm. To me, she just does not carry that same kind of presence that her character has. It isn't so much that I feel she did a bad job as Sue. Just was a mismatch.
Back in the day, Sigourney Weaver would have made one hell of a superhero, or villain. She'd have been the ultimate Star Sapphire.
You also have to consider on screen chemistry with the rest of the cast too.
Most actors can pull that off, but sometimes you just don't feel it with a cast and it carries in the performance. Like Blake in GL. She just didn't have that onscreen chemistry with the rest of the cast to make her role work well. So it felt off.
Like Jessica Alba has onscreen chemistry with the rest of the cast in Fantastic 4, but she's lacking presence, which makes her feel slightly 'off' for the role.
It's rare to find that quality of both though.
Btw, I definitely agree about Fillion or boreaniz for GL, but I guess they wanted a younger hal so the actor would grow with any sequels. T_T
Personally I wished they used Fillion for Hal, and then reynolds for Kyle. That would have been perfect and given everyone a pretty "Holy Crap" trilogy if they did it more as an adaption of Emerald Dawn, Emerald Twilight, and then Sinestro War/mixed with return of Hal. Might even be better as a four part to toss Mosaic in there. It's a shame they blew their wad too early on Crazy Guardian possessed by parallax instead of building that up and using it in a mosaic adaption movie that could spill over into Hal becoming possessed but not knowing it for Emerald twilight. Of course all of that would need some minor story tweaks to make it work too(like coast city being one of the cities taken in mosaic and it gets sent back but without the people or something alluding to them being dead while Hal is infected with parallax so he fears the worst which could create some of the same psychological breaks the comic used, and include how he's about to get over it, on the cusp, but the guardians interrupt it and make him snap). It'd make for a really eerie cliffhanger for mosaic too. All is restored, Hal lands to check on friends or family at their homes, but the city is deserted. Then roll credits.
