When the baddies took over the city, it was like Die Hard but more brutal!
And you gotta love McKay. Promoting him from a very minor reoccuring SG1 character to maincast for the spinoff was one of the best things they did.
(As well as recasting Elizabeth. Nothing against the original actress, but she didn't have the presence Atlantis Weir had)
But I tend to go back and forth on Atlantis. I do not deny that it's an excellent show, funny and great writing... but to me... I dunno. The further it gets away from the base concept of Stargate... People in a modern setting going through the gate to explore worlds and cultures (Some alien, some based on primative earth cultures)... the less it works for me.
I mean it makes perfect sense! The way the continuity has advanced, that is! Gaining more technology to create their own ships, going to atlantis, SGU... even the way the mythology for the series has panned out, it all makes sense.
It just stops being as... I dunno... it doesn't stand out as much from the other Sci-fi as much.
And SGU losing everything that makes SG unique (It's strong and unique sense of humor for one, being a Battlestar Galactica ripoff for another) doesn't help.
I really enjoy Atlantis (Unlike SGU), but for all these reasons I'm just a little more into SG1.
