IESB
spoke with
Stephen Sommers
, director of
G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra
, recently and Sommers revealed interesting information about the upcoming movie. He revealed some of his inspirations for the movie:
IESB: You didn't only direct G.I. Joe, you were also involved in the story process, point blank, I read the Skip Woods draft, which I liked, at first I thought, "Wow, that's really good," 'cause as an adult it felt very Jason Bourne-like.
SS: Yeah, and that's the problem I thought, I read two scripts and to me they were kind of generic, especially the action sequences, every action sequence I had seen before in some other movie. I love the Bourne franchise and I love James Bond, but right now, it's kind of Bourne is Bond and Bond is Bourne, they are trying to fight against each other and when I was a kid, the Sean Connery James Bond's were very different and that's the one I fell in love with and that's kind of the direction that I went.
IESB: You did have the underwater submarine base in there, it did have it's James Bond elements.
SS: And I wanted to make sure every action sequence - in those earlier scripts the action sequences were not only generic but just very, I mean, they were action sequences you would see in a contemporary Bourne or Bond film. Larry Hama created this fantastic world with these fantastic characters so every one of our action sequences has to be a sequence that couldn't be in any other action movie, it wouldn't fit. You would never see an accelerator suit chase through Paris, it wouldn't fit in any other movie.
He also finally revealed who
Brendan Frasier
will be playing, and it isn't
Gung-Ho
, but another character who fans have been speculating about all along:
IESB: It will, the universe has been established and you don't have to do too much of the origins anymore of who's who you can just go right at it. Now, we all knew Brendan Frasier had a cameo and I tried to catch the name, who is he playing?
SS: It's Sergeant Stone. There's a half a dozen actors in the film that I've worked with before, at least 4 or 5 from the Mummy movies, I like to work with nice people. I don't work with assholes. They are all nice, there are a lot of other actors I'd like to bring in, there are a lot more G.I. Joe characters to go!
With
SGT. Stone
's actor revealed, Sommers went on to talk about the iconic ninjas,
Snake Eyes
, and
Storm Shadow
:
IESB: There was a reason he had a vow of silence and that resolved itself in the story.
SS: No, no, no, you know, in the mythology Storm Shadow didn't kill the Master.
IESB: That's right.
SS: Ah-ha! See, I won't give it away but, right now the movie appears to wrap up, their relationship appears to wrap up but there's something missing that most of the audience doesn't know yet.
