I think a lot of who you are as a collector boils down to 3 major factors. $$, space, and what you over all want to get out buying toys. $$ if you got lots then don't complain as you can afford a big house, buy case loads of toys and buy anything and everything you want. If you have this then you can afford 2-3 or mroe of everything and leave some moc and some open. If space is an issue then what you buy will reflect that, aka maybe MU figures moc as you can display and hold more then ML or MI. Lastly is what you want out of toys. So are you buying them to display and leave moc never to touch, and then possibly resell them for a profit.
Some people buy toys cheap and resell for double, tripple or more because the demand and popularity is there. Like buying a ML deadpool figure for $20 and selling it for $100. If you want to display, do dios, battle scenes, take pictures, poses, customs, etc you need to open. It is easier to display toys MOC as a thumbtack will due. Loose requires, shelving, display cases, and more laterial space, where as moc is typically more vertical and horizonal wall space, unless placed in tubs for storage, but seriously at that point why bother? That's either an indiciation you need more space as you have too many toys, or you're buying for the sake of buying and not for the love of collecting.
Honestly when it all comes down to it, you work for your $$ what you spend it on is up to you, so what you do with the items you spent your money on is up to you as well. It's kinda like going to Walmart and spending $50 on a batman video game only to put it on your shelf and never play with it. No different then a $50 transformer toy keeping it moc and not touching it. I don't see the point in it, except for resale value. I'm getting a moc ML series 6 Deadpool soon and I plan to keep him MOC, as much as I want to open him up and play with him, I'm going to keep him MOC due to the rarity of him and the collectabiity plus my space issue, easier for me to peg him then cram him into my display case.
