I still think alien tech in the form of ten rings isn't undoable, but I doubt they would go the mystical/alien tech route, even with Avengers fully embracing it.
There's no real need to explain where the rings come from, though ailen tech wont be so farfetched after the Avengers movie, will it?
As to the first movie, YES- the terrorists wre "The Ten Rings" nad the bald guy even sports a bigass ring he keeps playing with.
In the comics, the Mandarin occasionally gives a lackey one of his rings and puts him in charge of a group to command. The lackey gets to use the ring as he wishes- making him minor badass unto himself if he hets something like the Fire, Ice or Darkforce ring.
But the Mandarin gets to "see" through the ring and if the lackey gets defeated/killed, the ring teleports back to the Mandarin.
Beats making a bunch of Doombots, right?
Anyway, it's easy for them to establish that those Terorists were working for the Mandarin to aquire Stark weapons in the first movie.
