In which case I've found that filling a glass jar with hydrogen peroxide, putting the piece in and then leaving it a few days in sunlight (UV) does the trick. (It's actually sunlight which causes the problem in the first place.)

I've this purely with 80's Transformers and it works really well, if anyone tries this make sure you remove all metal components. Also hydrogen peroxide is highly dangerous stuff so read all the safety information and wear gloves/goggles.
