OK, so the 40 is the bigger memory. How can you tell a backwards compatible version from a new version?

The 20GB, 60GB and older 80GB models were the ones with backwards compatibility. The 20GB and 60GB use hardware emulation, while the 80GB uses software emulation. I have a 60GB one. The size of the hard drive should not matter, It's very easy and cheap to upgrade, as they simply use laptop hard drives.
