I hope/think Mattel will see this and realize they are missing a big opportunity here with the smaller scale.
To me, it seems like Mattel seems to follow DC Direct's (DC Collectables') lead on making a lot of their stuff. DCD made Watchmen; now Mattel is doing it. DCD did Blackest Night; much later Mattel worked some rainbow lanterns into wave 17 of DCUC (and they are still playing catch-up, with the offerings for CIE 2013). DCD is still in the lead for offerings from the Arkham video games, but Mattel has offered them. DCD will be releasing the core team of New 52 before Mattel will be. It would not surprise me at all if, by next SDCC, we see Mattel doing some good 4" figures. And they'll probably be 4" not 3.75".
And it seems like Mattel
can't
do the small scale well. So now they'll see what DCD is doing here, and have time to recruit a team that can do the scale well. I mean, they did 6" good but not great, so they got the Four Horsemen to do it. I'd think a year's time is a right amount to hire some folks and at least get some good prototypes together for a release in Spring 2014.
Also, it looks like everything DCD is doing is Green Lantern-centered. Mattel could start with Batman (we know how much Mattel loves pumping out Batman lines) and Superman stuff -- just like DCSH.
That's my hope at least. . .
