Not....exactly, no.
Goes like this- Tony made the Guardsman armor for his best pal Mike O'Brien- something wen wrong and he went nuts (the armor was configured for Tony's brain patterns and there was interference).
Later, Mike's broother, Kevin takes up the armor and serves as had of security for Project:Pegasus.
Then Tony lost his company to Stane and, though Rhodey managed to destroy all the Iron Man armors, Stane got the Guardsman armor designs and made twelve suits for the US Government to guard the supervillian prison The Vault.
Tony and Rhodey destroy these in the Armor Wars....and delete all plans to make more of them.
In the aftermath, Stane International makes later model Guardsman armors to replace the ones lost but they kinda suck- they're based on Iron Monger technology which was no where as advanced-
those
are the ones with spikes or variations or whatever.
That leg to more friction between Tony and Cap as Cap blamed him for some super villian escapes.
Marvel Wiki now owes me a quarter.
