Take Captain America for example, his costume is Kevlar, mail and leather, but until the new movies it's been shown as spandex or rubber. I really think that with the right fabrics and materials any comic book costume can come to life and not look like Halloween. They already put Wolverine in leather suit so why not dye that leather something other than black? I'm not saying bright yellow and blue, but duller shades would work or the two tone brown. Then use either a hood or a leather helmet for the mask.
Why does wolverine need the mask? It looks silly for such a serious character. Batman's costume looks silly, but it's been explained about the psychological aspect... wolverine's? Nope. Looks nothing like a real wolverine... just looks silly. I've always preferred the comics issues where Wolverine is not in costume.
