Best books to read to get a feel for her character, at least post-Return of the Jedi, are the Thrawn Trilogy(Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command) and the Hand of Thrawn duology(Specter of the Past and Vision of the Future) by Timothy Zahn. Allegiance is a good one too for her Empire-serving days. Kind of shows that she actually believed that what she was doing was right and for the good of the Empire and by that extent, the galaxy, which is why she was never truly on the Dark Side.
