In the original cartoon, Slash was a baby snapping turtle that Bebop kept as a pet (or was it Rocksteady? I forget which...). He got mutated, turned out to be dumb and extremely violent, stole some of Shredder's swords, and went to Earth. Fought the Turtles, got sent off, somehow got his intelligence increased temporarily, had a braniac-off with Donatello, reverted to the big dumb guy, fought them another time, and that was it.
Used in the Archie comics (as seen in my avatar) as a humanoid snapping turtle alien from Dimension X. Essentially went on a killing spree over the fact that his planet was deforested for firewood for Dimension X politicians. Fought the Turtles, later allied with their friends the Mutanimals. More of an anti-hero than the previous version.
In the more recent IDW comics, he was made by Stockman's scientists, a snapping turtle mutated using a sample of Old Hob's blood and mentally conditioned to hunt and kill the Turtles. Fought them, got wounded, ran off, and was taken in by Hob.
I'd detail his origin in the new series, but I don't know how to spoiler tag, sorry.
