One of the recent Japan-exclusive releases from Takara-Tomy was a new version of
Ratbat
. Released in the Japanese Transformers Generations line, "Senator Ratbat" is a humanoid version of the Decepticon Fuel Auditor, representing Ratbat back in the early days of the Great War when he was a member of Cybertron's corrupt senate. He is a remold of the Generations Scourge toy, using the mold's alternate tooling.
What makes Senator Ratbat so cool is the use of purple. Purple, long the color of nobility, can be very striking on a toy when a nice rich pigment is used and Ratbat goes one better and uses a very attractive metallic purple shade, complemented with blacks and golds. The final look is very imperious, and very impressive, bringing out all of the molds good qualities. The new head works with this, and gives the toy an identity all of its own. In spite of being largely the same as Scourge who he is retooled from, Ratbat has an identity all of his own and doesn't even immediately come to mind as a reuse of the mold. If that is a measure of how good a retooled Transformer toy is, then Ratbat succeeds with triumphant majesty.
