The Ultimate G.I.Joe wave, marketed and distributed as part of the G.I.Joe Retaliation Movie Toy series, introduced a somewhat obscure yet fan favorite character to new collectors. Although many are familiar with the history of Kwinn the Eskimo and the role he played during Marvel's G.I.Joe A Real American Hero comic book series, many new fans that aren't familiar with the character have asked "Who is he and how does he fit in my Joeverse?"
As such, we invite you to take a look at the character Kwinn the Eskimo, a song by the same name by Bob Dylan and the movie that inspired the character called the Savage Innocents starring Anthony Quinn. A question posed to Larry Hama revealed that the movie was indeed the inspiration for the character.
enjoy!
This was a painstaking process that took several weeks. I gathered up every issue of GIJOE that had Kwinn in it and scanned in the yellowed pages and retouched certain panels up in photoshop, brightening the colors to a quality that even the original comics did not have. Then it was a matter of selecting the best bits and pieces of the story of Kwinn that encapsulated the character. There was not enough material for a video to match the song so I dug deeper and included Ghost Bear, the DDP issues, and the recent incarnation(s) of Kwinn from IDW. This whole video was inspired by a random day of listening to the radio at work and the song "the Mighty Kwinn" came on. I knew that there had to be more than just a coincidence to this and after some investigation it was confirmed by Larry Hama that Kwinn was inspired from the character played by Anthony Quinn in the movie "The Savage Innocents".
