The bottom line is that Batman
does
sell, if not to the consumers, then at least to the corporate buyers (Walmart, TRU, Target, etc). Keep in mind, that while they're trying to get us to want their products enough to buy them, they also have to convince the big-box retailers to
stock
their products in the first place. Which is why they overproduce certain characters - the corporate buyers will readily go for something that has easily recognizable characters.
Which is why the TF lines have been so inundated with mass amounts of Bumblebees and Optimus Primes until very recently. At least now Hasbro's been able to make their cases equal-packs, so no character overwhelms another (in theory).
So while it absolutely makes one seethe, keep in mind that without your stupidly massive amounts of Batmen/Supermen/Flashes/Hal Jordans, the DC lines wouldn't have lasted as long as they have.
