The best thing to do is to beat them at their own game; get to the store before them. It is a PITA but sometimes that's the only way to get the items at retail prices. It can be a VERY WEIRD experience too. I remember running into an old grandma in a store who knew NOTHING of Marvel Legends(this was when Toybiz was producing their last waves), aside from their secondary market value. She noticed that as usual, I couldn't find what I was looking for, then she came out of nowhere with some checklist she printed off teh internetz, and suggested that I should do the same.

Then one day, when looking for an awesome 25th anniversary Snake Eyes with knives across his chest, I came across an old guy with a cart full of Hot Wheels to resell later on.

The sightings forums usually help a lot too.
