Putting the existing MU stuff on clearance would be a great way to clear the pegs for the new figures and give the aisle a little pop.
Maybe while the stores are at it, they can ALL disable that annoying Mashers display (or at least the voice chip or IR sensor in it).

The cynical reason is so Hasbro could make the retailers treat it like a new toy line and have them invest in it again. But there are also other factors, like trying to tie it into the buzz around Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also the new packaging looks different and anything new and different is more eye-catching to kids and collectors. I mean, let's face it: a lot of us tend to gloss over any MU figures that are still on the pegs now.
But it's not like this is some new strategy, either. Almost every long-running toy line goes through phases like this. Just look at Transformers, G.I. Joe and Star Wars as examples.

I would imagine there are some existing ones that would fit. Most are pretty generic and designed to work with figures from multiple different lines.
If not, give it enough time and I'm sure someone will make one.
