Prowl, I didn't remove any plastic from the socket itself just a little notch out of the opening to the socket at the bottom on the inside thighs. In fact, when I cut it out it looked like it was suppose to be that way anyway according to the mold separation lines. I also removed all the little bumps on the ball of the joint which frees up movement a lot without loosening the joint, provided that you only remove the bump and don't cut too much into the ball.
On straightening the legs, I taped the side 'pods' down with enough 6mm masking tape to go around the hips and taped the legs together at the lower thigh and upper calves and used a hairdryer to heat the plastic. Then I just let it cool down for the rest of the day and it was good to go.
