I have to respectfully disagree. Yeah, you can have slow episodes... but the content doesn't have to be total garbage. An example of a good filler episode would be the one from this past season when the group was split up, where Rick was alone in the house with the Sons of Anarchy rejects. That was a very well done episode, and VERY tense. It was even extremely well shot.
What wasn't a good episode was the one where Daryl and Beth sat around in an old shack drinking moonshine, while Beth droned on and Daryl moped around until he had a sudden burst of anger. Then they burned the shack down.
Episodes like the first example are few and far between. The only other episodes like it from throughout the show, and that are memorable enough for me to recall, are "Clear" and "18 Miles out". So, basically one per season.
The majority of the episodes are like example two. Episodes like the one where Carl wandered around on his own, ate some pudding, and lost a shoe. We're supposed to think of episodes like that as "characters development" shows, but just featuring certain characters doesn't develop them or flesh them out. It wastes time.
I know the reason why the majority of the episodes have to be that way. The AMC executives are a bunch of tightwad ***holes who won't give the show the kind of budget it needs. That's why the zombie count is so low and the action is so rare. It's way most episodes last season only utilized 2 or 3 of the main cast per episode. Knowing that fact doesn't make the show any more enjoyable for me, though.
I like Daryl. He's the most likable character on the show... but only because he hasn't gotten any major focus. He hangs around in the background and does something cool once in a while. The moment they decide to tell us who he is, I guarantee you that I won't like him anymore. Once they have him start making decisions, which have to be STUPID ones for the sake of the plot, then he'll just be as stupid as any other character.
But now I'm ranting again. Sorry. It just boggles my mind that other shows I LOVE get canceled so quick, while something like
The Walking Dead
gets renewed for a sixth season before the fifth one even airs.
