I theorize that the ones displayed at the cons were hand-sculpted originals. Either that or the way they were photographed made them look more detailed and better than they actually were.
But consider also how detailed the Dark Knight and Infinite Heroes figures were. I think Mattel switched to a different manufacturer to cut costs, and the results show how lousy this has been (e.g. softer detailing, derpy misaligned eyes). I bet this happened starting with the Man of Steel figures -- compare the detailing of this line with the Dark Knight Rises.
The simplest comparison to ask: Why did the Infinite Heroes line generally look great -- and these were meant for kids! -- compared to MV?
I wonder if the Evergreen/Unlimited line is produced by a different manufacturer, not the same one doing the MV.
