The Nightmare on Elm Street series was the same way as well. Part 2 was mostly forgettable, but man were parts 3 and 4 good...
Friday the 13th part 6 is the last one in its franchise that I can throw any appreciation at, and even then it's not too much. It introduced super-zombie Jason, which I like because it fully embraces his condition. Visually it never made much sense that his body was so well composed considering how he died and how long he had been dead prior to his resurrection. Part 6 also felt like the first Friday movie to embrace being a cheap sequel as Jason's kills got a little bit more inventive and things were done very tongue-in-cheek. He smashes a girl's face into the side of an RV and it actually makes her face indentation on the other side
That shit was funny.
