but.. for some people there's just no way to relinquish the nostalgia of the originals. so, no matter what, they're never going to like anything as much as they like the original trilogy.
I don't know that I'd say it's a step above the "originals" plural. I thought it was definitely better than ROTJ which was plagued with ewoks. It might even be technically better than the original Star Wars but here I find it difficult to draw the line and I think that's mainly because the first Star Wars was a much more adventurous film in spirit. It was basically an Arthurian tale about a young knight and his wizard friend going to save a princess from the evil castle and there's magic. TFA is more serious in tone but as a movie it carries nostalgia on its sleeve. This is why I find it hard to say TFA is better or not than the original, because even it can't put aside nostalgia. ESB simply still reigns supreme, it explores some heavier themes while it also builds on the mythos of the force and basically serves as a reality check for Luke. First the rebels get their asses kicked on Hoth, then Luke crashes in a swamp and gets shamed by Yoda, then he ignores Yoda's advice and springs a trap which gets him physically maimed and mentally broken. The movie ends with the good guys losing, it's grim but it's highly effective to show the struggle of light against dark and that just because you're on the "good" team doesn't mean you'll win.
