Do you have some Apoxy clay and paint? If you don't have another hammer to spare that fits, maybe you could make a hammer to use until the real one turns up. I'd advise centering the handle around a toothpick(with Apoxy for thickness)to ensure that the thing is stable.

Otherwise, if the hammer is too thin, just put some double-sided tape inside of her hand and see how that works.
