The appeal of the Punisher to me has always been that he is very easy for someone who has ever lost a family member or friend to a violent crime can relate to, especially when the court system has failed them in some way and the punishment does not fit said crime. While there are hundreds of other superheroes with similar origins revolving around tragic loss due to criminal acts (Batman, Daredevil, Spider-Man etc.) I think the thing that strikes me most about the Punisher is that he is literally the one hero (or anti-hero if you will) that ANYONE can become.
As much as we would like to fantasize about it, we will never be able to travel the world learning all of it's fighting styles, have an endless fortune, or be a detective that puts Sherlock Holmes to shame, as well as the most eligible bachelor or bachelorette in town, but any emotionally detached or unstable individual with a knowledge of and access to firearms and the steadiness to use them while under fire, could go out into the streets and take the law into their own hands if they so desired. They more than likely won't get very far because police units are no where near as inept as they are in comic book, but it's still very much a possibility. This sort of vigilantism has in fact become quite common in South and Central America, where civilians are taking up arms and patrolling their own streets in an attempt to rid themselves of the narcos and drug dealers that have preyed on them for far too long.
