You cannot make much for newer toys unless they are very rare exclusives.

Pretty much everything in between is going to go for a few dollars more or less unopened.

If you love action figures, and you love to play with them (pose them, display them), then I would say buy the characters you like the most and open them.

The thing that most collectors forget is that the only thing worth any REAL money is really old and pristine toys. Vintage Star Wars...Vintage G.I. Joe...etc. etc.

This is the same with comic books. I laugh at the people who collect now-a-days and think that they are going to turn a big buck for their collection of "SIEGE" or "SECRECT INVASION"...These are newer...they only sell for pennies on the dollar.

Older comics are where money is...and again...they have to be pretty damn mint.

SO, decide on what you want....a little more money? or a great collection and display...
