I think the majority of people on this site prefer to open their toys. I know I do. So, I think you'd be in good company by opening up your collection and actually enjoying it.
Also, as Johnnyakiba mentioned, only the old stuff is going to be really valuable. The only reason collectibles end up being valuable is directly related to how rare an item is. The old stuff is so valuable because people didn't think about toys and comics as collectible items. For the most part they were regarded as junk and therefore not taken care of or straight up thrown away. Today, those old items hold value because there are not many of any particular item in good condition. With the toys that come out today (Star Wars, Marvel, etc) they are so mass produced that the likelihood of an item being really rare is not high, unless of course it is intentionally a variant or has a low production run. There will always be some exceptions, but I think for the most part nothing that comes out today is going to fetch anywhere near the sums of some of the older stuff.
If you're interested in buying some Star Wars stuff I say you should go ahead and do so. And open those suckers while you're at it!!
