I was still typing my post out when this got posted but yeah you're right.
Speaking of the GotG symbol, I don't like that it was never openly explained. The emblem is Star-Lord's fire brand (identical to what the movie used as the Ravager symbol) with the Nova star stacked on top of it. In the comics this design first appeared at the end of the Thanos Imperative as part of the shared memorial the united space people created to honor Nova and Star-Lord's sacrifice to save the universe. I guess the reader can infer that Star-Lord made it the team symbol when he returned from the cancerverse to honor the memory of his friend but since this is never openly stated it is technically left unanswered.
