For my part, I like John Boyega as an actor, but agree that Finn's characterization needs work.
Although I'm far from the type to complain about people "calling everything racist", I do think this article is kinda reaching in some places, or at least, not representative of the entire "black community"'s opinion on Finn (I hate when people act as if there's one monolithic "black community" whose members all share the same opinions). Again, this is one person's opinion, and while they do raise good points for discussion, they don't firmly "prove" the movie is racist (especially because of the stuff they got factually wrong that some of those points are built on), they just generate discussion on whether those elements are racist or not. But again, they did get some things definitely factually wrong, like saying that Poe is white (he's not, he's Latino) and using Maz Kanata as an example of Disney not wanting to put black women in the movie (which would be a perfectly reasonable supposition, except for the fact that Lupita has said that she chose to be a motion-capture character, as after 12 Years A Slave being such a "physical role" as she said, she wanted a role that "wasn't at all about her body") As far as I can tell, general consensus amongst Star Wars fans of color (specifically in the group that people would complain "complain about racism too much") is that Finn's a good character.
