Not really, because IIRC, the stores themselves are buying the right to sell the exclusive. So if anything, they're making
more
money.
I could be mistaken on my facts there, though, so if anyone in the know could correct me, please do.
About Store Exclusives, it depends on the Manufacturer/Retailer relationship. About 18 years ago I worked for a catalog/dotcom as a Buyer. When I negotiated the Trinity exclusive, the vendor gave us 1 price and the minimum amount needed to order. When we did an exclusive with another company, it cost us a lot more because of tooling and a few other things. Costs can be driven down if new tooling is reduced and depending on how many they buy. The more you buy the price goes down. The was a third exclusive where I had my counterpart at the company go back to the sculptor and ask if he had a different head for the figure as it was going to be primarily a repaint. My counterpart didn't believe the sculptor had done a 2nd head because they did not request it. He agreed to call the sculptor. 10 minutes later he called me back and asked how did I know and emailed me the picture. I told him, I had a feeling the sculptor did the head as requested by the company and then made a head that he thought the character deserved. Only a minor cost increase of about $1 or so.
