Without even getting into specific callbacks to the era, the entire premise itself is entrenched in the 80s trope of a band of misunderstood outcast kids going on an adventure....i.e. the goonies, monster squad, cloak&dagger, explorers, etc. Add some classic Stephen King and there you go.
I've always said the Goonies was just Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five' updated for the 80's and set in the US.
I liked Stranger Things, but I wasn't wowed by it the way some people were. It looked digital to me which made it feel like it was modern - even though it was set in the 80's. I never saw a reason for it being set in the 80's other than some kind of appeal to nostalgia (and to get to use some great music) as it didn't have any plot relevance. I also found the show a little too meandering, and it felt like the creators didn't have an 'out' planned when they started so there are threads still hanging. The next series might clear them up though.
I know I'm in a minority with this, and I did enjoy the show, but I really found myself shrugging by the end (btw - I binge watched it).
