i wouldn't call it a war than an ongoing debate among avid collectors who are scale selective. Even labelling them "scale nazi" is extreme as they are just hashing out their differences than taking prisoners.
As for compatibility with playsets and vehicles, 3.75 inch scale does offer more to that advantage. That compatibility applies in various ways and not limited to just Hasbro. Other manufacturers produce or have produced vehicles/playsets to that scale and are relatively available. Back-collecting them is also part of the fun. Not mentioning the volume that 3.75 inch collectors can amass and display with limited amount of space.
Lastly, while vehicles and playsets are on the decline, they are not extinct. It's more than likely Hasbro will produce vehicles for the next Star Wars installment for BOTH 3.75 and 6 inch scales. The latter of which i find impressive, given the cost and scale. But we have seen a rise in 6 inch scaled vehicles and not just from Hasbro.
